Hi, Ive made up my mind between the contenders. I can find plenty of info's for them, ER-5, 600 Bandit, but not the GS500.
So, heres some questions:
1] Are you satisfied with it? How goods the road handling, etc?
2] How heavy is it? Ok for medium tallers, im 5-10.
3] How much is a tank of peterol, and how many miles on that tank?
4] How much is servicing, etc?
Thanks for any info's you can provide,
Nath. ____________________ Past: GZ 125 K4 Marauder, VL 125 LC Intruder, FZS 600 Fazer. Present: GSF 600 N K3 Bandit, GSX-R 600 X(soon)

Well I owned a GS500 for two years, and sold it september this year.
Handling was quite good, though skitish at most speeds and bloody scary above 70MPH as the chassis really isn't up to those speeds and seems to flex abit.
And I am only about 5'7" and I found the GS to be very light and easy to manovre, after all its only 169Kg dry.
The most petrol I ever put in mine was £10, and that lasted about 140 miles. Not the best fuel consumption at all, also although they quote it has a 16ltr fuel tank I could never fill it more than 13ltrs.
An average dealer service is about £100, depending on what needs doing.
All in all the GS is a decent little bike for new riders and alike, though they do get quite boring after a short period of time and if you could afford the extra premium I can highly recommend the GPZ500 over the GS500.
Also I compiled an FAQ on 500's a while ago on this forum, it can be found in the link in my sig, or in the sticky posted by Bendy at the top of this forum.

Only thing is, Im only seriously considering new bikes (unless practically new, ie 400 miles on clock-used for DAS, etc). So, GPZ is out of the window.
Just for piece of mind Id prefer new, as I know that it aint had a kid on it thraping the b*ll*cks off it from day one.
[EDIT] Thinking of a little practicality, the GS500F would be better for what Id be using it for. All year biking through the country side. [/EDIT] ____________________ Past: GZ 125 K4 Marauder, VL 125 LC Intruder, FZS 600 Fazer. Present: GSF 600 N K3 Bandit, GSX-R 600 X(soon)

Yes they have. www.e-mmc.co.uk , there in St Helens in Merseyside.
Not too far from you and even DK Motorcycles in Newcastle-U-Lyme have new GPZ500R's in stock. (The R version is an import ) |

I used that e-mmc website just out of interest. I searched for used bikes, and the only keyword I could get to work was 'Honda'. That brought up a solitary VFR750. Do they not actually do used bikes then? ____________________ I must not be a troll...

Yes they do do used bikes they have 2 sites, www.mmcbikes.co.uk too and I am not sure if one is used more than the other.
I know one day a week they update the whole list so it maybe today. Or falling that give them a call and ask for a sheet with all the used bikes listed. |

I cant vouch for the standard GS500 but mine which had a few modifications was just perfect, the handling/acceleration/protection/comfort and pretty much everything was just right, powerful enough to keep me grinning for a good 4 months but gentle enough to forgive me the many times I..... got over enthusiastic.
Mine is currently having its engine taken apart at £400 out and £400 back in because it went wrong, on the whole however they are greatly reliable.
I did however start getting bored of it before the engine died and that was just 4 months/5500 miles in.
I am now awaiting a definite price on repair and finding out what went wrong and have already payed for and will be collecting my GSXR600 next week, the GS500 is nice, a great step up but it got too boring too fast for my liking
Not quite what you asked for but just my experience with the bike. ____________________ 04 Suzuki GSX-R 600 K4 - Sex on wheels :>

^^tricky subject. I don't actually know and I dont think people have a definete answer on that one. I tried pm'ing TC, an ex traffic biker/cop but he never got back to me on it.
Basically, the way I understood it was that they can ask for proof and if you can't prove it via paperwork, they'll give you 7 days to have it tested and bring the proof into the polis station. That way you can rush to the bike garage, order a restriction kit (£140 with next day delivery) and get the garage to fit it. Then get it tested.
Although, I'm probably completely wrong, but if thats the way it is, then thats the way I'd get proof.
As a note, I am not restricting my bike I have to say. |

Ill probably consider it. But, I doubt that I would. I ride up some stonking hills everyday, some of them at 20 mph in second.
So, I need a ickle more asap.
But, if its gonna be the case that they are sh*t hot on it, I would.
I ride through the West Mids (my home county) through to Shropshire, any folks got any experiences with the West Mids/Shropshire police with restrictors? ____________________ Past: GZ 125 K4 Marauder, VL 125 LC Intruder, FZS 600 Fazer. Present: GSF 600 N K3 Bandit, GSX-R 600 X(soon)
