Threw my bike down the track, is this fuel tank saveable?

Decided to throw my bike down the track at oulton park at about 100mph. Bike hit the grass and flipped over, leaving me with a rather destroyed tank.

Is this tank savable, or is it a complete write off?

New ones with no dents are £200 ish so if I can fix it myself, then I would like to.

Ouch!

Doubtful - that's pretty severely creased and that could well mean weakened. I'm no expert though.

In all honestly i've fixed a few fuel tanks in my time but my response to that one was a burst of laughter!

If it were essential to fix, say it were a part that's not totally impossible to make, it could be fixed. Sealing it up and pumping in high pressure water to hydroform it would work, but then it'd need to be finished with some filler, painted etc... ultimately it'd cost more than £200 to do and result in a tank not so good as a new one.

If you can't afford to fix it, don't put it on a race track.

I can afford to fix it, just don't see the point in spending £200 if I don't have to.

If it's possible to remove the dent, I can fill any imperfections with filler. My uncle can respray it for me. It might cost me £20 for a bit of filler and paint, but that's a lot less than £200.

Can I fill it with water and put it in the freezer Laughing?

Short of cutting the bottom out, panel beating out the worst of the dents, shaping it back to almost how it should be, welding back in the bottom plate, pressure testing it then filling all of the dents and spraying it I can't see a cheap way out of that one.

Seriously though, Ouch! Are you ok? That looks like an interesting smash!

It's got a fuel pump hole underneath, was going to take the tank off and see if I can get into it from there and bash it out. Its only one dig dent if that makes life any easier?

Yeah I'm fine, slid down the track on my bum. It was wet (hence the crash.... wasn't on wets and pushing hard) which helped me slide along!

You said it yourself, "destroyed tank"! Badly creased and stretched, I think you'd need to be pro or better to get that looking pre-accident, and if you were you wouldn't be here asking if it's fixable! But of course, good luck if you do decide to try proving me wrong!

No i'm afraid that is likely fucked.

You could try filling it with water and freezing it as a cheap fix but i've heard that it's got more chance of bending the tank out of shape than popping the dents out.

If it was just one dent i'd be more confident about repairing it, but it's got multiple dings and is pretty creased.

I would write the tank off personally matey. Wouldn't trust that when it eventually springs a small leak 20 miles from home and sets fire to your legs Shifty

Why would you pressure test it exactly considering it isn't required to hold anything under pressure as opposed to simply leak testing it as it holds a fluid?

No it wouldn't. Not unless the OP made a negative for forcing the tank into the required tank shape but as he doesn't have a perfect tank to form the negative and if he did this thread wouldn't be happening...

Pretty irrelevant as its not load bearing as such, just holds fuel.

Its got even more chance of just becoming a tank with a big chunk of ice in it than anything else.

Seriously chaps, the tank is scrap. Its stretched and creased, its not economically repairable and these ideas are so far down the bottom of the garden drinking tea with the fairies its ridiculous.

I thought as much. I had already written off the tank off anyways.

It still holds fuel, so for a laugh I might try the water in the freezer approach. It'll either fuck it more, or work but has to be worth a go for the lols.

The dent itself is just one big one, but the impact has creased the tank though which is the worst bit. Not surprising considering the bike probably hit the grass at 60+

Relevant. It holds a highly flammable liquid that has mass, slops about under braking, acceleration cornering forces and will put strain over time on any weak areas. Too risky. Wink

I did say doubtful. I wouldn't attempt to repair it and if I couldn't afford £200 for a new one, I'd buy a secondhand one with a few scratches and minor dings for much less and fix that. Thumbs Up

In which case you should fly to Japan and tell the bike manufacturers as they don't pressure test tanks EVER.

Well, I do and I don't lol.

Part of me wants to fix the bike on the cheap.... it is my commuter.

But the other half of me says I should look after it properly/ fix it properly so it still has some valve when I come to sell.

Plus I want it to be orange so its going to be painted anyways. If I can pull out the dents / fill bits before I paint I would like to Wink

Pressure testing is something completely different and not really relevant - they aren't required to handle pressure just volumes of flammable liquid. They also dont structurally compromise their tanks with high speed impacts and attempted repairs. Laughing

Now if it had been a gas tank in the real sense of the word... Wink

Ah sorry half asleep so bad reply. If it doesn't leak it would be fine so use. If the fuel could smash its way though 1mm+ sheet steel it would be a miracle.
