Landing at filton airport, it was moving so slowly through the sky it looked like it was about to drop like a stone.
Its un natural something that big can fly!

The Airbus Beluga.

Fucking ugly aircraft.

Btw, it looks like a bruiser but a 47 tonne payload is not exceptional. Still amazing airframe shape.

I'm glad to see they're doing something to transport all the fatties around, regular aeroplane seats just aren't up to the task any more.

I see this quite regular, not sure if it's the same one but air bus isn't too far away from me so see it flying over. I know what you mean about it being slow, always has me amazed how it manages to stay in the air going so slow.

I guess it's because your brain thinks size = mass, so something that big shouldn't fly. In fact when empty it probably weighs less than a fully loaded passenger plane!

It's a touring aircraft, you've seen those mobile homes that have vehicles attached? This is the aviation equivalent, you park up and fly off to the shops in your more economical runaround...

Just a pity that Filton Airfield is closing for good on 21st December. Seem some awesome planes flying in the area.

I see this image, and all I can think of is "Yo dawg, I heard you like planes, so we put some planes in your plane so you can fly while you fly".

Well, there was the Aero Spacelines "Pregnant Guppy", based on the Boeing 377, which was later upgraded to the Super Guppy; both of a similar type to the Airbus above but much older. Currently there is also the Boeing 747 Dream-Lifter.

The Airbus is a A300-600ST, nick-named the Beluga.

The Guppy's pretty massive, but by no means the biggest.

That title goes to Myria, the Antonov AN-225. Fucking colossal thing.

Nobody even said it was the biggest. Even the C-5 blitz's this thing for takeoff weight and some dimensions.

It used to fly over us quite a lot when I was younger as we lived near Airbus Broughton where they now make wings for the A380 (which *don't* get transported in that thing - they'd never fit).

I got this blurry photo of it from the top of Moel Famau a few years back...

Doesnt need to be, aircraft parts are light, just a little bulky.....!

AFAIK there are 5 of them in total, and they are coming to end of life, Airbus are beginning to consider their replacement.

Beluga based on A300 if anyone is interested.

Oh, A380 and A400M have been at filton in the last couple of weeks, A380 may make 1 more visit before the airfield is demolished to make new homes for romainian immigrants who will begin to arrive en-masse 1st Jan 2013 when the temporary contols are removed.

I saw one on 'Supersized Earth' on iPlayer. The one on there opened at the back, and the guy said it's the only way they can realistically transport parts around the world, otherwise they'd take too long to arrive, time is money and all that.
