I will be officially on leave from december 14th until Jan 15th! It is our summer holiday.

My leave only really starts on the 18th as the 16th is a Public Holiday - the Day of the Vow. The holiday to commerate the victory at the battle of Bloed rivier when the Afrikaners held of a Zulu attack. Afrikaners 3000 Zulus 0 Mr. Green

I dont know what to do with myself for so long! 1 week will be a long bike trip to the Cape. Maybe a few smaller trips for a day or 2, and half the time with kids. Do work on the house like treating all the exterior wood, cut bush for firewood etc

I wonder what dole recipients do all day? I think one month will stretch my patience.

Maybe I should ride out to Bloed riever in Natal for 2-3 days going via the gravel passes through the drakensberg mountains. Very remote, slow going and steep but breath taking views. Katoom country. And come back via Zululand.

I hope you Brits enjoy your sleet and ice and cold rain over this period Razz

Yes. Often. It is one of those check list rides that all off road and DS bikers do, hence it is always crowded with bikes and 4x4s. I avoid such places like plague. Poeple go up there in big groups of like 30 bikes. Anathema to me.

It is being paved now. Then all the road bikers will be going up there as well...

There are far more technical and scenic rides than Sani in my opinion. And far less travelled. I have a Google earth coverage of every mountain pass in SA.

There is also a layer in google earth under Gallery called Tracks4Africa. it shows all sorts of warnings, attractions, and much else of interest to bikers and 4x4ers. I use it often when planning trips.

The other area that I was disappointed with were the southern cape passes near Kysna to George. Great scenery but not difficult riding and herds of bikes and 4x4s that come barreling at high speed around hair pin turns. You just see dust and crowds and have to stay alert. You can hardly stop 2 minutes without someone coming by.

In the Karoo you can ride all day and if you see 3 cars on the gravel it is a busy day.

I guess it depends if you ride to be seen, or you ride to see things and as few people as possible.
