Luggage space? I think it destroys the bikes personality with 2 big boxes sticking out of its rear end, does anyone find it effects your handling?!!!
What do you think about it?

I think luggage is integral to some bike's character :-

Not really.

As I mentioned in another thread, you might want to find out a bit more about biking. Get 'into' it a bit.

Bikes are made to be compact, which is why the ones not desinged for touring don't have luggage space.

If you start to put space in a bike, then you are taking away other features.
The big sports bikes have a lot of technology fitted into a very small space. It has been said that bikes are closer to a F1 car than to your average day to day car.

Luggage on a bike is an (occasionally) necessary evil.

Removable luggage is best!

And whether it affects your handling depends on how much stuff you have actually managed to stuff into it.......

However, an advantage (or disadvantage, depending on your point of view) of luggage is that fully loaded with camping gear etc, apparently a small bike is MUCH easier to wheely....... Wink

You want one of these: Honda Deauville.

As said before some bikes don't look right without luggage.
Sport bikes can have removable, usually soft, panniers that don't affect the handling. In fact a top box will affect the bike more than panniers. Sportier bikes can usually get away with a tank bag and a tail pack. That doesn't affect things too much as it's all in the centre line of the bike, just raises the centre of gravity a bit.

That's the fun about bike, different one for different things. There's even a few that'll do a bit of both (ever seen a Pan-European at a track day - scary Confused). Know someone who swears by his R1150GS for touring and takes the boxes off for fun at the weekends Very Happy

If you go for Oxford, be sure to go for the Lifetime Luggage. I bought a tank bank about three years ago at the Ally Pally show from a dealer whose name I could no longer remember when, after 50,000 miles in all weathers, the zip eventually broke.

TBH, the zip (and the bag) had been thoroughly abused.

I called Oxford to see if they could repair it, and pointed out that I no longer had the receipt and did not know who the supplier was.

I was told to return it to the nearest Oxford dealer (which happened to be J&S in Watford, who I like to deal with, despite what's being said on another thread!).

I returned the bag to J&S who sent it to Oxford, who sent me a new all singing all dancing new one within a week.

Not bad, thinks I!

In my experience most bikes that are meant to have them usually have mirrors that are wider than the back of the bike. If the mirrors go through the gap the rest of the bike will follow Thumbs Up

Yes, it's a right pain putting a flat pack wardrobe on the bike Very Happy
Although maybe that Goldwing and trailer doesn't seem like such a bad idea Sick Very Happy

Ever tried taking a car to the Bulldog Bash? It's a bit of a walk to your tent. having the bike fully loaded means you're aware that you're a "Proper Biker" Very Happy And don't care that peoplelook at you. You actually look quite stupid turning up to a bike rally with no luggage Very Happy
I use my panniers to do the shopping, they don't really affect the handling so long as you get the weight right. There's nowt finer than packing up your baby with shitloads of bungee cords Cool

sadie, you actually like to deal with J&S in Watford?

you dont find them a bunch of know nothing monkeys?

my track record of getting what i ask for in there is fairly limited, and their knowlegde of products, and advice is pretty crap

i only buy from there when i know exactly what i want Thumbs Down

useful to have it 3 mins from my door, but it really is an effort to shop there sometimes Rolling Eyes

Well, I think my supermoto looks well smart with the two big aluminium panniers I recently fitted to it, in a 'Paris-Dakkar' kind of way.

They have a low C of G and are fixed rigidly so they don't really affect the handling at all. They are too wide to fit through my gate but are narrower than the handlebars so filtering is not a problem.
