I'm opening a new savings account, and the first deposit must be sent to them through cheque, but I don't have a cheque book.

How do I get around this?

Thumbs Up

It doesnt make sense that it must be a cheque. Are you sure?

That sounds a bit silly, but banks do have some strange demands!

The bank that holds your current account should be able to draw you a cheque but they may charge for it. Alternatively you could ask a friend or family member to write a cheque and you can give them the cash?

I believe you're allowed to draft your own cheque.

Indeed, someone was in the paper once for writing a cheque on an old house front door and carrying it to the bank. Laughing

I remember seeing the news once and someone had written a cheque on a dead shark and took it in a wheelbarrow as a protest

What do you suppose they'd have to say if you wrote 'I promise to pay the bearer the sum of ten pounds on demand' on the back of a tenner and gave it to them?

Who's this with, the Official Most Reliable Bank of Nigeria?

It's 2012. If they want your money, perhaps they could find a way to make it easy for you to give it to them.

suspect its a postal only account with a small BS? If so, tell them to join the 20th century and accept electronic payments, but otherwise get your bank to run you off a cheque (don't ask for a draft, they'll probably charge you for that) you just want a check drawn on your account.

Like has been said, get someone you know to give you a cheque in exchange for cash.

You could send me a tenner via paypal and i'd post you a cheque but it seems a lot of pissing about to get an account.

Was going to open an account with AA banking and they asked for the same.

Look legit? Was going to go to the bank for a cheque tomorrow but this thread has made me question whether it's legit. The minimum initial deposit is £1000 so not talking pennies. Their bank came first on Money Supermarket so seems legit.

I've filled my ISA for this years allowance so need to open a savings account to put the money in until the allowance resets, that's why I'm opening this online savings account.

Why wouldn't it be legit?

A cheque in your name (which is what they're asking for) is useless to anyone except you.

Cheques don't contain any fancy information, just your account number and sort code so it'd be fairly trivial for someone to make a fake cheque in your name without having to go through the faff of making a fake website and setting up a PO Box for people to post cheques to.
