PostPosted: 16:17 - 10 Dec 2012    Post subject: job ideas Reply with quote

been pretty much out of work since June. I've signed up to a few employment agencies near where I live but they don't really have anything for me. Currently working as a Christmas temp for Royal mail, but not had any shifts for what will be the 3rd week this week and before that it was only one per week.
Trouble is I have no idea what the feck I want to do, which is probably why agencies are not going to be able to help much. I've worked in retail since I left school. Been at the same place throughout college and uni I worked at the same shop. While I didn't hate working there, retail isn't exactly the best paid job sector so I left in the hope that being jobless would make me find a job.
What do you people do for a living. I'm really open to almost any suggestions (bar rent boy)?

Seems as you ride is there any call for couriers in your area?
Or if/when unemployed could you get any funding towards riding instructor?

I did look into courier jobs. I can't ride at the moment, doctors orders, but they should clear me on the 19th. Also don't have a usable bike since I knew I wouldn't be able to ride for at least 2/3months

You need to pick something you enjoy and find something related. Simple.

Do you have any talents or special skills which could be utilised?

Don't really have any special or unique skills. I am the jack of all trades. Good at everything (or many things) master of none. I'm pretty fit and strong and good at sports that require co-ordination, strength speed etc. I'm also pretty smart. Good at maths, science, languages all that crap, but still nothing unique. I do know that I'm good with problem solving and fixing things. I'm pretty good with technology too. My biggest weakness though is imagination and coming up with an initial idea, which is why I'm struggling here. Usually, when I get an idea, even a small one, I can either throw it out and start with something better, or develop that idea to make it work

If all goes south, go for physical/factory work.
It's monotonous, boring and tiring, but it's better than nothing.

Never mind what you want to do, just do anything and leave the tricky stuff to the cosmos.

Eg: Temporary bin loader leads to bin loader, leads to bin driver, leads to chargehand, leads to management and 45k. Seen it done. Your future can be in the most unlikely of places, don't beat yourself up, your time will come and you'll end up exactly where you should.

BUT THERES NO JOBS!!! SHUSH WE CANT CLAIM DOLE IF YOU TELL THEM THERES JOBS AVAILABLE WE HAVENT APPLIED FOR!!
etc.

If you've got a lot of time and are on the internet a lot and nifty with graphics, try something like spreadshirt.com
Retail is a pit unless you push for supervisor and up to manager, most people I know who work in retail go from dead end to dead end

Try the NHS Wink www.jobs.nhs.uk
Although we're all being sold off Rolling Eyes

My mate did something similar in about 10 years went from a warehouse temp>warehouse perm>sales>team leader>assistant manager and now he's the manager of a superstore.
All with the same company.
I think part of it comes down to the person, but you also need to get in with the right company as many will happily watch you rot away in a dead end job.

I didn't get into my currant career until I was 27 and it wasn't anything that I'd really wanted to do or had any particular interest in beforehand.

Physics/maths tutoring in your spare time would be a bloody good idea for some extra cash.

Military?

Or does your "not allowed to ride" condition prevent it?

You wouldn't want to do my job, it pays even less than retail. You should go back to retail and work your way up the ranks...get to Assistant Management and earn a decent wage. Stick with what you know (for now) and have experience in.

I can only reiterate what others have said, you need to find something you like doing and find a related job. As the saying goes, "If you find a job doing the thing you love, you'll never have to work another day in your life" or something like that.

I got a job as a graphic designer a few months after graduating. Ever since I was a kid I have loved drawing, I would take myself off to my room for hours just colouring in and drawing things. The only other thing I ever wanted to be was an artist. Graphics paid more. I basically get to colour in and draw things all day now and it's ace, if I leave my current job it will only be to go self employed doing the exact same thing.

There is one other thing that's crossed my mind since learning to ride - motorcycle instructor. Only thing is I'd need 3 or 4 years experience and I aint got one yet! Is this something you would be at all interested in doing? You are on a bike forum afterall... I always thought it would be a pretty good job, if you are a responsible person good at teaching others.

The military won't accept me at the moment. I had a rotator cuff repair 9 weeks ago. Still have absolutely no strength at all in my shoulder. See physiotherapist at the end of the month. Hopefully she will say that I can return to 'normal' activities, like driving and riding etc. Will still have to take it reasonably easy until I regain full strength around February time.
I have signed up for temp work. The post office job is temp work, trouble is there isn't any work.

Twisted Evil
I do know my stuff about protein, that's why I offer my knowledge on forums such as this. Laughing
btw: I did speak to my sister (sport and bio-mechanics degree) as she said that protein is not usually a limiting factor. Studies suggest that the general population have deficiencies in areas besides protein for max muscle building. The major one was energy. People simply do not consume enough calories to maximise their workouts. The other was creatine, which allows re-synthesis of ATP. Creatine is a major component in the majority of these protein shake things
