Hi

I've never used, has anyone on here?

My immune system doesn't seem to be the best regardless of how well I eat or rest. I've read that L glutamine boosts your immune system as well as benefits muscle growth/recovery.

Tablets or powder, and how much should I take?

Definately worth taking it if your into training etc. Helps bump up your amino acids that you lose whilst traing. I used to take it in powdered form and took a rounded teaspoon of it after training.

Don't know much about it as a gym supplement, but it is probably worth recognising that cancer cells are particularly fond of it.

As for gym supplements, glutamine makes up a considerable proportion of your skeletal muscle protein. After a period of fasting (i.e. overnight) or prolonged activity, your short term energy reserves are largely depleted and one of the next sources of energy is muscular glutamine. I would suspect its use as a gym supplement is an attempt to counter that.

Fat is used for energy not muscle.

It will do once fat reserves are gone.

I've used it myself in the past, thought I noticed some benefits but looking back now might well have been placebo, although a few friends have sworn by it - it can't hurt to give it a whack and see if you notice any gains. It's pretty cheap from what I remember so no big wallet buster if nothing comes of it.

Wrong, they are both used.

There are several organs/tissues that require glucose, and wont metabolise the FA metabolites produced by breaking down fats. Fats have a glycerol (3 carbon), which if you use two of them can make a 6 carbon glucose, but that is inefficient. Much more efficient to use amino acids, such as glutamine and other stuff via a process called gluconeogenesis. Glutamine also plays a non catabolic role in gluconeogenesis.

Fats are used, but so is muscle glutamine (and other stuff too).
