Hey me again..

Bought a bike saturday. Just did a DVLA check and the tax ran out the start of december. Bit stuck as to what to do, I don't have the v5 yet in my name so I can't SORN or tax it. Don't want to be hit with any charges.

I don't need to use the bike so there is no rush, I just know DVLA can be sneaky bastards and try to charge me? Any help on this would be great.

You can tax it at the Post Office with the little green slip new keepers supplement.

Tax with new keeper supplement.

For future reference - if the bike was Sorned by previous owner, the sorn will run out on transfer of ownership, so you'd need to do a new one.

If he didn't sorn it in Dec, then sold it - he may get chased by some inbred fuckwits, but that is his problem, not yours.

Nope. You need valid MOT and Insurance.

It is insured, but I don't have my cover note. Didnt know if the PO could check.

I'd do it online if I had the V5.

You could always phone and ask. Wink

Can't you print out a certificate/cover note or didn't you insure online?

If you have the docs online, you can print them out and use that.

It was policy amendment, they said they'd email them through. It took an hour to get through to them on the phone yesterday...! No online docs.

The post office will need to see the document for the insurance. If you don't have any kinda of document that falls within this period (the 12months you're insured for) then they won't do it for you. That being said, if you have a copy that should no longer be valid but shows your bikes reg and a policy date expiration for the future, they won't know any better.

Really?

Direct.gov says this:
If you have recently purchased this vehicle and you have not received your full Registration Certificate (log book) from DVLA (the green slip alone is not enough) you should NOT use this service.
If you do use this service without having received your full Registration Certificate (log book) from DVLA then your new tax disc may be sent to the previous keeper of the vehicle.

I assume you had to negotiate with the old keeper to get the tax disc off them...?
