They sell them for £2.99 at a shop near me and they're as good as any. Must be for sale at that price elsewhere

Cheap and decent are nearly always mutually exclusive.

Decent = merino wool (try icebreaker kit)

Cheap = polyester. Any outdoor shop.

There is however an exception to every rule.

Cheap and decent = Swedish army surplus.

I got Campri ones from Sports direct for a few quid each and they do the job but as Stinky said. The Merino are as good as you can get.

I wear the Campri ones with a top over them and then a fleecy jumper and my bike gear over the whole lot. Its great.

I bought some last week at a army surplus stall at a local weekly market, cost £5. They're excellent, best I've ever had.

Something like these..

Good old Marks & Spencers for the Merino-polyester mix pair. £20. Not the cheapest or the most expensive, but you pays yer money....

Edit: I googled Swedish army ones, and the only ones I can find are 100% cotton. I wouldn't choose cotton for insulation.
Cotton takes ages to dry if you get it wet, synthetics will dry much faster.
Wool will still insulate while wet, and dry out quicker than cotton.

ASDA is doing cotton-y thermals for £8 - £10 per item. Worth investing as a 'trial set' before blowing your wallet on the expensive merino type stuff (£40 -£60 per item).

I rarely wear them, only if I'm due outside all day on ranges or something then they're oh so comfortable and warm. Never wear them if there's any sort of running about though, I overheat very easily!

I took the bike out to warm up the chain before cleaning it on Sunday and put on a pair of Peter Storm long johns under my jeans for the trip.
I was waiting for things to get unbearably cold before heading back home but they never did.
I think I could have stayed out for a fair few hours.

Lidls were selling them a while back. Popped in the other week but they were out of stock. I think they were retailing around the £6 mark

Primark do a thermal underwear range that is half decent.

Whilst I love merino wool clothes, and like the idea of merino long johns, base layers that you can't really wash aren't high up on my want list. I also find merino ever so slightly itchy, nothing like normal wool, but enough that I wouldn't want it somewhere I can't get away with scratching.

More like thick tights with a gap to slip your johnson out Cool I bought three pairs from primark about 3ish years ago, survived everything so far. Easily the most comfortable type of underwear 'cos they don't ride up into your crack or chaff your balls.

I've been working outside a lot the last few weeks and will be for the next few months so thought I'd invest in a cheap pair and if I get on with them I might buy a better pair. I'll report back when they turn up, they were dispatched this morning Thumbs Up

Why worry about getting them wet...unless - you have a bladder problem... Wink Laughing

I've had my 100% cotton Peter Storm long johns for many years, and they've maintained their leg length throughout. I paid less than £10 for them. One satisfied customer.

ASDA sell them pretty cheap. That's where the ones I'm wearing now are from. Very comfy.

It may sound gay but
