PostPosted: 23:00 - 06 Dec 2012    Post subject: Old helmet stickerbomb project Reply with quote

Hi im new to the forum and this is my first post on here, i hope i'm doing everything right.
So here is my helmet at the start when i used it for couple of months (the red one):
https://imageshack.us/a/img829/3061/p1811220412.jpg
Then after couple of months it looked like this:
https://imageshack.us/a/img201/7571/p1703261112.jpghttps://imageshack.us/a/img853/7483/p170301261112.jpg
But then again after about half a year it was very tiredm scratched all over and was dropped so many times so i bought myself a brand new HJC helmet but because this was my first helmet and i've done nearly 2 years riding with it i would like to keep it but i cannot ut it on a shelf as it looks really bad it's in very bad condition so what i thought i'll do with it is stickerbomb it so i started and here are my first steps as thats how far i got today with it:
https://imageshack.us/a/img525/1425/p223701061212.jpghttps://imageshack.us/a/img15/584/p2238061212.jpg
I didn't have any more stickers at home.
So yeah thats as far as i got through today, i bought some stickers of ebay and im just waiting for them to arrive.
If you have any stickers at home unused and you would like to donate them to me please PM me and i'll give you my details.
Thanks for looking
Will update as soon as something changes
This is the effect that i would like to achieve:

Errr? ok ! welcome to the forum.

If that bash-hat is tired and scratched, is it no longer usable?
You mention that it`s in really bad condition, how does putting stickers on it help?

Hey, each to thier own Thumbs Up

W-H-Y-?

If its dead.... bury it.
Its not obje-da...
Its just.... a cheap nitro lid covered in free shit off a magazine!
Does it have sentimental value or something?

I agree with Tef on this
...to a point.
however if I knew that my new helmet was ok with stickers being slapped on it I might start a mobile scrapbook.
every event you go to over the next year, get a sticker.
every gig you go to, whether it's a big named band in a stadium or the band that's a mate of a mate down the pub, buy a sticker, slap it on your helmet.
then 2 years from now you'll have a stickerbombed helmet that also is chocked full of memories.
you'll look at it and think "Remember when we went to there?" or "remember when we saw them?"

The whole point of this is that i want to keep the helmet but it's scratched so doesnt look good, and i like the stickerbomb style thats why im doing it this way, some people like it some people dont end off

It's certainly different and unique! It's your helmet mate, screw what the other people say. I wouldn't do it to mine, but I'm not going to slag you off for liking yours like that.

Why not strip it down, and do a respray on it with your own design rather than cover it in tacky stickers?

Ah right, decoration. Was gonna say, sticking a load of opaque stickers over your visor, seems wise Laughing

Like I said, WHY?

If its dead, and not fit for purpose, then cut straps and get rid, stop any-one using it & risking thier head.

If it has sentimental value, first hat, then, I would have thought that the battle scars are part of the sentimental value, each telling a story envoking a memory, so stickering it would remove half the value.

However....

You know, taking that hat, and trying to do something you AREN'T good at, even if its not that impressive or exiting, would, to my mind at least have been far MORE interesting than putting up a picture of an old hat, covered in stickers a five year old could have slapped on it, and trying to call it 'Art'...

Maybe I'm a little concervative and old fasioned in that respect... I dont see the asthetic interest or technical artistic skill in an old tyre submarine or a pickled sheep.... nor, sticker clad old hat.

But, I would have been more impressed by some-one trying something difficult, challenging and hard to do, even if they failed to achieve excellence, than something well....?!?!

If you're not good at painting then it's all the more reason to do it on a shitty old helmet, you gotta learn somehow

And yes, boring stickers are boring Razz

I'd take a stab at painting it. Even if you mess it up you can put your stickers on it.

Too late for that decision as i'm like half way through the stickerbomb so its not worth me peeling them all off and painting it. I dont wat to put huge amount of money and time into this project as i won't use it anyways

The term "Stickerbomb" sounds like something they'd use on Art Attack...

One mechanical Newb, one Cheap Nitro lid that had seen better days.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Custom%20Helmet/101_0001.jpg
Aprox an hour later, after a little elbow grease, sand-paper and some masking tape.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Custom%20Helmet/101_0007.jpg
Five minutes after that, and half a can of primer left over from another job, that would have just gone hard in the tin!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Custom%20Helmet/101_0010.jpg
Couple of hours later, after hunting out some more left over rattle cans, and getting a bit nifty with some masking tape.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Custom%20Helmet/101_0017.jpg
Some while after that, removing masking tape....
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Custom%20Helmet/101_0021.jpg
Masking COULD have been a bit more accurate.... stripes dont 'quite' line up at the back... but......
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Custom%20Helmet/101_0025.jpg
this is how we learn, by giving it a go.....
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Custom%20Helmet/101_0034.jpg
Air-brushing a real-art mural was possibly a little ambitiouse, but for the custom effect, 'selected' stickers, used judiciousely and apropriately are a legitimate DIY technique, to get that 'pro' look.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/the%20pup/101_0042.jpg
One day later, laquered in and finished, with the bike that it was intended to be worn on....

Yeah... I had personal involvement with that hat, though it's not mine but Snowie's.. I just gave her the encouragement and offered advice. And yeah, its not perfect, as said stripes dont quite line up, and using pre-made decals is a bit of a 'cheat'... BUT.... imagination, she wanted something 'retro' that matched her bike; she wanted something sort of mural-arty, with a wolf theme, and she had a crack.

Took about two days, and used basically left over materials, apart from the mural decals that were something like £3

It needn't be expensive, it needn't take a huge number of months or hours of pains-taking preperation and attension to detail; it needn't take HUGE amounts of imagination or skill, or experience.

It JUST takes a little effort and enthusiasm, and the bravery to have a go.

And sorry we haven't all leapt up all enthusiastically saying how wonderful your hat looks, which you may have hoped for, but come on?

If its not worth anything, its just a dead hat; BURN IT and be done. IF you want to do something with it, do something worth while and actually creative with it. If its worth sticking on your shelf, then its worth the effort. If not its a bit of kindling taking up good house space!

Sorry again to dissapoint you all but im sticking with the stickerbomb for this helmet, please dont call it hat as it clearly is a crsh helmet not a crash, i really like the painted helmet taht you showed me but it's too late i still prefer to stick to the stickerbomb, i do it because i like the way it looks. And here is another surprise for you im getting my old JEB'S motocross helmet which i let him use for couple of months and now im getting it back and i'll probably repaint it so will make another thread
