... with 21000 miles on it.
What should I be looking for apart from the second gear issue? Seller claims to have had engine rebuilt with new first and second gears... Is 21K about valve time on one of these? Any codes I should be looking for on the dash?
Any and all advice hugely appreciated Thumbs Up

Ignore him. R6 was '99.

Gearbox is the only thing that goes wrong, or if it's a 2000 model with the twin rear lights conversion, make sure they haven't made a hash up job of it.

They had the tendancy to crack barrels, so get it nice and hot, and check it's still running right.

To replace the gears - apologies if that wasn't quite clear.
Also - it appears in good nick, what's the price I should be going for?

WALK AWAY FROM THE R6!
(I used capitals as i am shouting)

The R6 came out in 1999!

jackelliott07 should be banned from discussing anything to do with anything in life lol!
Been a long time since ive heard such bullshit

Valve clearances are i think meant to be done at 24k miles

there was recalls done on that model and if these were done then they can be identified by a punch hole mark in front of the frame number and then a second punch hole mark on top of the third or fouth number on the frame.
This recall was to sort the lubbing in the gear box and the other to address a side stand issue.

An R6 should not really require a rebuilt gear box at a mere 21k miles
let alone a rebuilt engine sounds worrying
This highly indicates that the bike was either a race bike used real hard, or was simply abused wheelied alot and not cared for.
The off chance maybe that it was a faulty gear box but i highly doubt it
It is known that the gear boxes are not the strongest of the bunch but still can be fine if looked after

My old R6 did tend to burn some oil so it can be hard to spot if this is happening

But as said with this R6 walk away there are plenty out that have been looked after well it just takes time and care to find one as many R6 have been either abused or crash repaired to a bad standard.

To be honest i thought the Suzuki GSXR 600 k1 was a better bike felt more planted and stable just the R6 is more slim line and lighter at the front end.
Both bikes really come alive above 9k rpm!

To be honest, with the stories of cracked barrels and dodgy second gear the r6s were pretty much off my list anyway. Just figured if this one had had the second gear issue sorted (he just let me know he did the gears and dogs), then maybe, just maybe...
Woo, I'd rather have a K1 GSXR to be honest, but not come across any worthwhile ones in budget Sad Which incidentally is £2K if anyone has a sports 6 they want rid of before Christmas Very Happy.

I'd be saving my money and buying a 2003+ version, as it is about a million times better than the early R6s, which, were, frankly, a bit rubbish.

woo, not sure if you know what you speak of TBH.

Gearbox's on R6's commonly fail at that sort of mileage. In fact, I'd advise against buying one at this mileage if it HADN'T had the gearbox fail yet. Also, they fail due to sloppy 1st-2nd gear changes, ie: power wheelies in first and trying to slap it into 2nd to keep it going.

If it hasn't failed, it's not likely to fail unless you abuse 1st and 2nd. Learn to clutch up in 2nd it'll be fine. Mine was bought on 18k, sold on near on 30k, near enough all of those miles were HARD abuse, and never had any hint of a problem.

In reality, if it fires up nicely, ticks over smoothly, revs cleanly and rides fine, get it. You can't really kill modern engines with abuse if they're serviced correctly.

thats my point if you abuse the bike the gear box will fail seen it happen to a load of mates but mine with 25124 miles on the clock never failed and was sweet as a nut, i never had any probs as mine was looked after and the previous owner also took care of it.

They are also prone to cracked liners too.

Mine lasted till 40k ish before the liners cracked and I needed to rebuild into new cases, but 2nd gear looked great with very little wear on the 2nd gear

Matt/woo, thanks for the diametrically opposed opinions! Very Happy As I was posting this thread I have to admit I was of Matt's mind - as the gears had been sorted then I'd look - if not I wouldn't have bothered at all. The owner says he has an rd lc so he can be trusted I think Wink
Woo, I think I may have been looking too close and missing stuff - just don't fancy spending too much time and travel looking at various potential shitters. Does look like I may need to spread my net wider though Thumbs Up I'm not in a ridiculous hurry, but looking to get a bargain at this time of year Very Happy

Ha! Tempting, but I don't want to add to the budget if I can avoid it. Insurance will go up too... Still, knock £500 off your asking price and you never know Wink

well i did say i wasn't sure about when they first made the R6 etc, so obviously the rest of my post was relating to a thundercat as i thought that's what he meant, my bad. no need to get all touchy about it i was just trying to help lol

edit: the 2nd gear issue made me think it was a thundercat also, since they're known for their 2nd gear issues.

R6 or k1 600 is a bit of a no brainer imo. K1 is a near identical frame and engine to the srad from 1997. It had a facelift and fi fitted. R6 is easily the best bike from the 90/00's.

Honestly not tied to a 600, but shying away from thou's mainly due to running costs.
Matt, that was the impression I got reading around about early r6 vs. gsxr of same era - not quite sure why Timmeh is saying they're 'rubbish' Confused That said, not sure how much difference it'd make to me Very Happy
