Love how they need to quote the top speeds of the bikes to make the public potato themselves.
Saw this comment and facepalmed hard.
'These death-traps should be banned outright. The amount of lives wasted and the cost of dealing with motorycle-related accidents is too great for society to bear. They are mostly play-things for middle aged men. They should grow up and stick to cars, or if they want to be on two wheels - a bicycle is much healthier and safer. Motorcycles - one of the most pointless items on this earth today (a bit like Harriet Harman in that respect).'

Regardless of the machine, I wonder what daddy's reaction would be if said helmet law were to be repealed and Harry or Wills turned round and said 'I'm not wearing my helmet'.
I suppose it's ok for them as their heads are probably the body part least affected by a bash! ____________________ Make mine a Corona. |

The top speeds have nothing to do with the dangers at all, they go as fast as you make it! Your bike might be able to do 10000000 mph but you can still get knocked off at 30mph by a blind car driver
If top speed comes into it then why aren't there articles about clearly incompetent drivers getting things like BMW's which are restricted to 155mph? That's not exactly slow! ____________________ Bandit 600 - deaded |

That's what I mean though, he's saying he's bothered about blind drivers yet the daily mail make it seem like it's the bikers fault for having such high performance machines
No matter who's at fault, bikes are evil! ____________________ Bandit 600 - deaded |

I wouldn't give much credance to what the press say; even less how they choose to quote or misquote old Charlie.
Bloke, when listened to in full, does seem to have some pretty interesting and inteligent ideas about stuff; and seems a quite pragmatic chap, with some very practical as well as innovative ideas about things; but then the press get hold of it...
Seem to recall that a rather lengthy and very inteligent talk he gave on modern farming practices, and the influence of the large super-market chains, tended to be bad both for farming and the consumer, restricting choice and discouraging innovation or re-innovation, of 'old' farming techniques... which all made an awful lot of sense.... but comment about how super-markets only stock lamb, and how breeding sheep up to mutton, has many agricultural merits and environmental benefits, and how there were many traditional mutton dishes no one could make any more.... got translated to the tabloids as him going on some crazy crusade to take farming back three hundred years and make us all eat sheep!
They did a similar job on him over the talking to trees thing, I seem to recall!
As for contradictions... well ignoring any tabloid distortion; its a skew argument.
Having a 'liberal' attitude to motorcycle safety in general does not necesserily contradict having personal concerns for one individual motorcyclist!
I dont agree with the compulsary helmet laws either...... My eldest Lad on a motorbike scares the SHIT out of me! He's a complete LOON! Crashed more times than Alpha he has! Is that a contradiction? Is there any hypocracy there? ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I think the answer to "What bikes do the 2nd and 3rd in line to the throne currently ride?" is "Whatever they want."
That said, there's several pictures of them out and about in pedboi gear. Maybe they can't afford anything better, aw, bless.
Royals are forever patronising things - I wonder if either of them will ever get on board with MAG, BMF or a similar rabble. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

All I got from that is parent concerned for his sons when riding because cars don't see bikes. Perfectly natural and honest IMO. Nothing wrong with that.
Couldn't get 2nd link and helmets, all about poppy appeal instead.
Also 1st link led me to believe William and Harry, sponsored by Ducati. You'd think a British firm, let's call them Triumph, would have stepped up and offered them something from their range. ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

First off, you've got reports from two different newspapers, when one often seems to manage to contradict it's self in the same day's paper.
Secondly, a lot of people don't believe that helmets have as direct an effect on 'safety' as you are led to believe. |
I appreciate that papers are not usually the most accurate of information providers, unless it suits them.
I should also have mentioned that the block of text I included was from this months 'the Road' (MAG's magazine) and was from a 'first hand source'. So everything could just be made up or edited to suit each issues own agenda.
I do not believe that the wearing of helmets have a direct effect upon safety, I hate wearing them myself and do believe that as an adult I should have the right to attire myself as I please when I ride. With my history I know that I'd be bloody stupid to venture out without one though although, despite numerous tarmac-eating incidents, there has only ever been light damage to the shell in two of those incidents I still wouldn't much have fancied gravel rash on my chin - which has a lot less damage resistance than a helmet!
The first article represents, the understandable, concerns that any parent would have for their child. Charles' concerns didn't seem to be about their riding ability but about implications that other road users may have on his son's safety.
They are all adults and, as such, should be old enough to understand the implications accidents may have if they haven't decided to go ATGATT.
Helmet laws have now been in place for some time, as have seat belt laws which I have even more resentment for, I doubt if there would ever be enough strength of opinion to get either repealed and whilst Charles has no power when it comes to making legislation I think our governmental system still gets Royal assent when legislation is passed - maybe he should have just kept his thoughts to himself?
The title of the thread may have been a little strong but would you have bothered to look if it was 'concerned parent doesn't like helmets'? ____________________ Make mine a Corona. |
