Looking for a bir of experienced advice more than anything.
Last week Rox and I broke up. Decided it was time to move on after a 5 year relationship.
Ive moved out. And very luckily have been given a place to live for nothing. Yup... parents! Laughing

Anyway. This gives me great opportunity to save some serious cash. Can realistically be banking nearly a grand a month after paying my bills and owings.

Ive about 4k on a loan and credit card which I could clear within 5 months. That then frees me up to save and do something interesting..

I want to go traveling for a year maybe. Having never done it, I wouldnt know where to start.

I am more interested in the road network across the world than nature etc. So I would like to do it under my own mode of transport. Even if it means buying a car or bike at each destination just to sell it again when I want to go to another country. Or if they are complete shitters, I would just give them away.

So anyone ever done anything like this? What do I need to consider?

And anyone planning anything similar for 2015? Could probahly use a traveling buddy. Aha!

I travelled around north america, europe and africa for about 8 months after the army. I couldnt settle. Just lived out of a balsac. Ended after I went for a party weekend to Stellenbosch with a mate finishing National Service with the parabats, and hooked up with navy divers. The weekend party ended up being 2 months, then I figured it is time to start doing something constructive.

I'm currently thinking along the same lines at the moment, getting to the point where its time for me to move on to something new in my life. I'm 26 years old with nothing keeping me in the UK plus I've saved enough funds not to work for a few years and being a controls engineer easy enough to find new work, so been thinking about another big offroad bike trip and some traveling for a few months then maybe working abroad some where new is my current thinking.

Sounds like a good plan and the last chance to do it before you do the settle and have kids thing. The problem is in many countries you cant sell the bike when you arrive. Unless you pay the import duties. In some countries they dont even allow that. Argentina for example.

off road is tops, as you know. adventure riding at its best. My plan is russia, when the kids are older and dont need me anymore. In the mean time, it is 1 week off road trips.

You already have a degree and a CV behind you.

The world is no longer such a big place though. If I were to do it now and permanently move elsewhere there are certain criteria that constrain you. If I were a brit it would be:

Must have good career potential
Must be english speaking (you brits only speak 1 language)
Mustnt be overrun with PC libtards (most of western europe and canada is out)
be good off road adv riding (the rest of europe is out. Russia excluded from first and 2nd criteria)
Must be a future for a young white man. SA is out.
Muzzieland has lots of work for expats, but limited road network for adv riding, and the culture and work ethic would drive you insane.
Asia. Too many people.

That basically leaves only Oz and Nz. I think adv off roading very limited in the USA as it is mostly private roads.

Travelling around the world? Have you joined up to ADV forums and Horizons Unlimited? They would be able to give you some idea about how to prep for a RTW trip or longer car/bike adventure and HU is a network for people who are doing these trips.

For sure. HU is a great site. Very focussed on trips minus the ewan and charley caravan.

Not so much a day to day site, but a site for planning long international trips.

Judging by that, a trip to Argentina seems on the cards.

Having been there briefly I can attest to its brilliance as a country. If only they'd stop bitching about the Falklands.

I was planning to spend the Easter holidays bimbling to Orkney on my Baby V. I thought it would be nice to meet up for coffee or equivalent with BCFites as I went. Anybody fancy a cappuchino en route..?

I worked there for a bit. In the south out of rio gallegos. In BA they put me up in the club navale. With the admirals. What is this falklands you refer to? You mean the malvinas? Lol!

Sounds like agreat idea. Your first bike trip. I would love to ride off road in the highlands. The only place in UK I gather is empty enough for hours of dirt with no people. Not like the siberia and outback I would prefer, but for me the best part of the UK

When you get to some of the roads in Spain, you'll be kicking yourself that you don't have something with a little more umph on uphill bits.
