Basically looking to build some form of crash bar for my bike.

It fell over a while back when parked on a hill badly Embarassed and the first thing that hit the ground was the engine casing. It cracked it.

I will be riding the bike all winter and if we get adverse weather down here, I dont fancy dropping it and smashing the casings. I'm not so concerned about going down, more about how badly it damages the bike. Levers and such are to be expected.

Best angle I can find of my bike:

So cheaply and quickly, what can I build as crash bars or sliders to protect the engine casings? Ideally, I can 'borrow' the materials from school which means I have access to different bits and bobs and machines.

If you are going to build your own, I would suggest you find a similar bike with crash bars fitted, note where they mount and copy them.

Get the mounting points wrong and the next thing is a bent frame or damaged engine when you do chuck it up the road.

People like Renntec/R&G etc. do do research and development on their products, it's not just plucked out of mid air.

Most bikes with crash bars have the frame running above and below the engine whereas this engine is mounted below the frame, thats the issue I am having. Just after any design solutions.

R&G and the like don't do anything. I did once see bungs that come from the top right (in this photo) engine mount. I could buy some nylon or similar and turn it down and then buy some longer bolts I guess?

Could you not have some sort of curved bar going from the frame at the top of the engine going down to the frame near the rear brake?

Probably wouldn't be as strong and may bend if dropped, but I'd think it would take the brunt of the impact and cushion the blow in a way and it also wouldn't be too difficult to replace with a brand new bar Laughing

That bar thing is the sort of idea I am after. Just a little more specific Laughing

And Smiler, that is the bung things I am on about. Though the pictures I saw they were much longer and looked hideous. I'm not bothered about looks for the winter though. Think I may have to make something like that up if no other ideas are 'brought to the table'.

I was going to suggest getting some nylon bar then drilling through the centre like we did on the old 125 racer but looking at the price of it, it might not be worth it unless you can get some cheaply? Iirc we used some 70mm thick bar for ours and made them something stupid like 6" long, worked a treat.

Yeah think thats going to be my only option really. Given the price, I'm gonna see if I can find some laying around at school next week. Hopefully it wont be snowy or icy but I'd rather be prepared.
