okay, so my dad made a ramp for my bike as i struggle to put it on the main stand. with the ramp i can wheel it up and it makes it alot easier to put on the main stand!

now i need to make sure the ramp doesnt get damaged by weather/water... or w.e else there is to damage it and we have decided to paint it and i was wondering if the spray paint will work? or if it wont "stick" to the wood? so yeah .. what paint shall i use? is spray paint ok?

Or you could just practice putting the bike on the centre stand until you get the hang of it....

This. I couldn't even put a 125 on the centre stand on my CBT..

Now the 500 is easy. It's just technique.

Leave in gear, whilst sitting on bike facing uphill flip the stand down.

OR

Park on flatter surface.

I'm rather weak too. It's not about strength, it's about technique!

When you say that you have a stand that is made of ''wood'' what kind of ''wood'' is it made of? Are we talking of real wood or are we talking of MDF/Plywood/blockboard/hardboard?

I'm a weakling and I could put my YBR on centre stand. Also not proud to admit this again, but I can pick up my SV650 from it's side Laughing

go to youtube and watch some videos, you literally need to step onto the stand. You don't need the alot of strength for the "lift in a semi circle" stuff. When you put your weight onto the stand, you could even take both feet of the ground so all your weight is on it ... not that I did that either Rolling Eyes

here's a decent video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwXZyJSPkx4

Cannot stress enough, but your foot on the stand and treat it like a step. If all your weight is on the stand and both legs of the stand are on the ground. All you need is a tiny tiny TINY rock back motion to deploy the stand.

Thumbs Up

spray primer will stick. but getting a bike onto the centre stand is a technique thing, and often you need to be holding the bike by the rear rack/pillion seat with one hand. the other hand on the bars is only there to steady it.

Yep, all for being able to put it on the stand yourself etc.

BUT

If you must use a ramp, I'd use something like Sadolin Four Seasons Garden Furniture Colour & Protector, its quite hard wearing and it's supposed to not let any moisture through thereby stopping rot. Its not cheap mind.

Spray paint won't work, it'll likely just soak into the wood, look crap and do nothing to protect the wood. You need a wood stain thats going to stop it from rotting.

This is all presuming that were talking about real wood and not just Chipboard or MDF which will just blow regardless of what you do.

So you're standing next to the bike, usually on the left side.
Put your right foot on the center stand.
The bike's gotta be level so push it carefully away from you
until you feel the other side of the stand touching the ground.

Left hand on the left grip, right hand wherever you'll lift from.
Push down on the stand with your right leg.
Put all your weight on that leg and push down while
lifting the bike up with your right hand.

The bike will lift and come back on it's own weight.
Your left hand is only steadying the bike throughout.
Don't try to pull back or lift up with the left hand.

The bike's gotta be on level ground and with practice
you''ll be amazed how easily it will come up.

I'd suggest not using the seat as a lifting point. They can have a
tendency to fly open. (Allegedly). Rolling Eyes

I'm 5'6'' with a knackered back and I can get my
XV750 up easily. It's not a light bike.

Use your ramp to practice then you'll be able to get rid of it.

https://www.coo-var.co.uk/floor-sports-line-paints/suregrip-antislip-coating/
This will also do the trick if you want something anti-slip.
There is a merchant near(ish) to where you are who deal with them and they should get a weekly delivery.
Let me know if you're interested and I'll get you their details Smile

Alternatively, sprinkle some sand on whatever paint you decide to use Wink

It's just technique though - don't just try to heave it back and up, use your leg to push the stand down.

On mod1 you can get away with just using the side stand. On the mod1 that I managed to pass,I actually asked the examiner which stand he wanted it on.His reply let's just do it the quickest way,as i'm sure you just want to get this out the way,and do the proper test.

Some bikes don't have centre stands.
I am quite weak physically, but I was shown the correct way of using a centre stand, and I now find it quite easy to put my Fazer on it.It isn't about physical strength it's about technique.

Wood preserve, fence paint. It will start to rot away untreated after around 5 years. Maybe longer

B&Q do a range of embossed metal sheets if your keen to re-enforce the soft wood

No rush then.

Just use any brush-on paint. Bit of sand won't hurt but just a light sprinkle. If you're constantly putting the stand down on it you'll wear the paint away anyway.

Putting the bike on the mainstand is a matter of combining your weight on the stand lever with you lifting the grab handle. Your back and thigh muscles come into play to make it easier.

wood preserver, then is it possibly to get some of that stuff you put on shed roofs to cover it with?

Also... Are you leaving it in gear when on the side stand?

From what I remember of CBT it was a mandatory part of the course and you didn't get onto the next bit until you could get it up yourself (so to speak)

It's just a matter of technique, don't try and lift the whole bike you just need to put your weight on the 'sticky-up-bit' on the stand as you pull and use your own weight to counter it and it'll just roll back onto it. Use the luggage rack/pillion handles with one hand to get more leverage.

you go somwere and need to stop for fuel or a cup of tea or ice cream or somthing

how do you put the bike on the stand then

what you need is practice not a ramp

If you get the balance correct, put all your weight on the stand and do it in one movement. Use your weight to help it out.

I can get my Vara (fully loaded) up on the stand in one go. It weighs a lot (as Paddy will attest) - ~250kg!
