First accident

Hi All,

Got knocked off my bike (the CBF 125) the other day (Thursday 13th!!). I was approaching a crossroads, the lights were on green, and a car was approaching from the opposite direction in the lane to turn to his right. He didn't move out into the junction and wait but instead started to turn early, moved across my path and then stopped a few seconds before I hit him. I braked as hard as I could but ended up hitting the front of his car (which was at 45 degrees to me) at about the mid point of the offside headlight, at a pretty low speed, but still with enough momentum to make me land just ahead of my bike.

Here's where my luck started to get better: the main witnesses, who were both waiting at the front of the queues going he other way, were a man in a car who was also a biker, and a police van with two police officers in it. The driver of the car I hit was trying to make out that it wasn't his fault because he said I was going 'really fast', but a couple of witnesses and the police put my speed at about 20 miles per hour before breaking. There was some suspicion that he had been on his phone but the police couldn't prove it.

The witness who was a biker was a really sound guy and made the situation a whole lot easier, helping me with my bike, talking to the police and telling the driver in no uncertain terms where he'd gone wrong, I was really glad he was there.

Anyway my bike wasn't safe to ride because the front wheel wasn't aligned properly anymore (think the forks might be bent). Some damage to fairings, bar ends, clutch lever, indicators etc but not that bad. Personal damage is just a bruised hip and painful knee.

Another biker stopped later when I was waiting for recovery, it's great that bikers are always so willing help each other out.

Bummer but at least your fine and able to tell the tale.And sounds like you have got the best witnesses you could wish for to .

Seems like your okay and any witness is great, especially those that stop to help you. Hope you get a quick resolution via insurance.

Lol what kinda of defence is "you were going to fast"... So what you saw me enough to know I was travelling really fast... But still you drive into my path!! Attempted murder then was it? What a dumb f**k! Ha!

Glad you are ok, like you say it was a perfect accident to have (if ever having one can be perfect) as you had the coppers there to back you up.

Cheers guys. I was really lucky with the witnesses. Pretty glad I wasn't on the brand new Street Triple that's safe in my garage as well!

The thing that annoyed me most about it all was the various things that were said by the driver and some of my family etc that just wouldn't have been said if I'd been in a car. The driver clearly thought that because I was on a bike I must have been going really fast so it was my fault. And I've had a few comments like these: 'so are you going to sell your bikes and get a car now? You'd be much safer' and 'perhaps you shouldn't be riding at this time of year anyway'. Surely it's the muppet in the car not paying attention to the road that's dangerous, not my bike!

I've done a lot of miles on that CBF, it's perfect for the commute, so I'm hoping it'll come back soon.

they all live in their perfect little 6 sided boxes thinking they are immune to any harm and anyone outside of that box is wrong and automatically guilty of something thats just not true.

good your alright, good to have police witnesses too, insurance company's are far less likely to try and play the blame game on you when there are police officers who can clearly state "the rider was not at fault in any way"

Nice bit of good luck with regards to your witness's.

Don't listen to friends and family when they tell you to get a car or get rid of your bikes. I had the same after my accident. They soon get bored and give up.

Unlucky, but at least you walked away relatively unscathed.
As for the front wheel being misaligned, if not bent forks it might just be twisted forks, which is much easier to fix.

Sorry too hear about your bump. The front wheel may just be forks twisted in place a bit. Simple fix if it is. Good too know you came out OK.

Morebeer and Sable: Cheers, hopefully then that is the case and it's an easy fix. Although I'm glad I was on the CBF rather than the Triumph, I've done a lot of miles on the 125 and it was sad to see it looking a bit worse for wear.

The insurers have given me a hire bike, a Kymco 125. I'm not especially keen on it after a quick ride to the shops and back but I guess I'm stuck with it for a few weeks (I don't want to take the Triumph out during winter if I can help it).

Last march I had an accident which sounds identical to this - oncoming driver did the exact same thing, turned right across my lane early and just stopped. I had one witness who was apparently useless but still came out with 100% non-fault. There's a long process and lots of paperwork ahead of you considering you were injured, mine took 6 months. UPDATE:

The bike is a total loss. Frame is bent apparently. They're giving me a good valuation for it though so I won't be out of pocket (when the money eventually arrives).

Still, it was my first motorbike, I was hoping to keep it for commuting until the end of it's days, didn't expect that to be so soon! A bit gutted.
