Maybe they have been around for a while and i havn't noticed them. On the way up to Rivi Barn for lunch (in a car, shame on me), I noticed some new, or fairly new signs at the side of the road. They were counting up from the start of the M61, in increments of a half, (.5, 1.0 1.5 etc). Point is, the were not at mile, half mile distance but appeared to be at a Kilometer spacing....... Is this the first sneaky introduction of KPH on British roads?

Aren't they just distance markers on the motorway? They've been there years if they're the ones I'm thinking about.

Hi bomberman, those are eactly the signs I am talking about.
Now, I don't know what the cost of these signs are, probably pretty eyewatering, so, spacing them at Klick intervals must cost considerably more than mile intervals......... One has to ask, why? (Just call me paranoid).

Well, it's to aid the emergency services getting to incidents quickly, so a klick would give a tighter location than a mile I guess.
Apparently it cost £7.5 million according to the link. But, will save lives/emergency services time etc. so who knows what the actual cost is.

Some company under the guise of safety, lobbied the UK government i.e. paid bribes to be given the contract to improve safety. And thus installed millions of these signs at a massive profit to improve safety.

My point is that maybe my cheap chinky speedo that only measures in KPH might have a future use after all....

its not about the cost spacing them in Km`s instead on miles, its all about european harmonization along motorways & major trunk roads.
The same style of sign can be found across europe so when the UK finally followed suit, years after the scheme was implimented, it was more sensible to continue the km precident that was set in europe
Also in todays society with everyone having mobile phones, when theres an accident on a motorway etc, the emergency services receive dozens of calls from people who arn`t really sure exactly where they are, this can cause confusion & delays to the people sending the emergency services to the scene, so telling the authorities the details on those signs will more acurately pin point the location, & possibly save someones life

Should you find yourself broken down at the side of a motorway or major trunk road in the UK, the AA RAC etc can find you IF you tell them the details on the sign nearest to you.
Likewise if your broken down on the hard shoulder, in possible danger because of where your broken down or theres been and accident, if you phone the highways agency information line on 0300 123 5000* (0300 = cheap rate even from a mobile) & listen to the short recorded message, and when prompted to say "report" you can get through and speak to a real human who will probably arrange for one of those 4x4`s to turn up and assist you, or in the event of an accident, arrange for the emergency services

* it may be useful to you all you add 0300 123 5000 to your mobile, because 1 day you may just need help from the highways agency etc. & sitting in the back of a 4x4 while the AA turns up will probably be better than freezing at the side of the road

The sign that is missing in most places, IMHO, is a junction number as one approaches the motorway from an 'A' road. Often a detour will come-back to a motorway but with bugger-all indication as to where one is joining it.

its even more confusing in Europe where the motorway junction numbers are actually the Km distances, so the junction numbers don`t follow sequentially (1, 2, 3 etc) instead it may be 12, 27, 43

They are Marker Posts to identify a specific location and are an extension of the marker posts at the edge of each carriageway.

Each carriageway is marked A and B so as an example 47.1A is the westbound carriageway of the M4 close to the Thames Valley/Met border, and the B carriageway is eastbound.

These marker post numbers are contained in the Motorway manual in each traffic car (well in Thames Valley anyway) and helps the control room and the crews identify where they need to be heading.

The larger signs are a recent introduction and are being used more and more, but it has absolutely nothing to do with KPH or MPH
