Hi,
Bit of a strange one this, please bear with me.

Earlier on, me and a mate went and got macdonalds, and drove past an abandoned Vectra which has been there for about a week and a half. No stickers on it, tax is out. Its in a layby on a main A road. We got food, and decided to park up and eat in the layby, as i have a tendancy to eat while driving and im not exactly careful.
Anyways, as we pull in, there is an AA van and the patrolman is fiddling with the nearside of the car. We didnt really think anything of it, maybe it was getting tow'd away. The bloke saw us, stopped what he was doing, and sat in the van. A few minutes go by, and he comes over to us. He asked us if there was a problem, we said No, we had just stopped for eats. He hesitated and there was an awkward pause before he returned to the van. Few more minutes pass, and he walks back to the car, takes the key from the top of the front wheel, and starts looking through the glove box etc, all the time keeping an eye on me and my mate. So i asked him, whats the story with this one then? He umm'd and didnt answer. I said i know it has been dumped for nearly 2 weeks and asked him how he got the key. He didnt really answer, hid the tax disc, and took some things from the glovebox. He then went back to his van, so i wandered back to my car. As he drove out a few seconds later, he stopped alongside us and glared in. He seemed to have a massive problem with us seeing what he was doing. He left the car unlocked, and took the key with him. We noted the vans reg just in case?
Id just like to add, me and my mate didnt touch the car, or have any plans too. It is still there several hours later, so wasnt being recovered.
Is it worth mentioning to anyone? I think its a bit pikey-ish for him to pinch bits from it when on duty in the works van? Or to sell the wheels to someone with a puncture?

It's disgraceful is what it is. What year Vectra was it? Mine's okay at the moment, but you never know.

just file a report at the local cop shop. this will also report the vehicle abandonded and get it towed away as its a potential hazard being there.

and how long till someone comes along and torches it causing a further hazard and drain on the fire department?

Was the AA man doing 32 in a 31 zone? No, then the police won't be interested in what he was doing. Especially if he had a key for it.

Report the car and the police may tow it if it's got no tax in it. Much easier to send a penalty to the last keeper for non-display of tax than to chase up someone actually being dodgy.

Report the car as dumped, get it removed before some scum bags nick it and either torch it or kill someone.

As for AA dodginess: about a year ago I saw an AA man removing the wheel clamp from an untaxed car.

He got a thumbs up as I went past.

Martay, don't take this the wrong way but what do you look like?

My guess is that the AA guy was either doing his job or just helping out a mate but then saw two dodgy looking geezers in a cavalier pull up. When they started questioning him (given that he's on his own with an expensive van full of tools) he thought something was really dodgy and buggered off.

If he has the key he's probably legit, just nervous.

without locking it? if it was the car of someone you knew surely you would ensure the car is locked?

if you wouldnt, remind me to never leave a car in your care cause if you leave ur mates cars unlocked i'd hate to think what you'd do with a strangers car! hehe

no offence intended, just a little banter and joke.

You know what locking a car left in a lay by achieves?

Broken windows as well as a stolen stereo...

If he was worried by Martay and his mate then he probably was thinking more about getting out of there sharpish.

Sounds like the case of when the RAC van got caught pulling up to somebody car and nicking it's wheels, replacing them with old steel wheels.

Then I'm sure you'll hate it when someone sticks their nose in whilst some scrote is nicking your bike.

Did someone once catch you having a wank or something? Your definition of "nosey" seems to include "noticing that something is happening".

"Yeah I saw that bloke mow down 3 kids and drive off but I didn't want to call the police because I'd look like I was being a bit nosey."

No idea of outcome, never heard anything else after an email saying they would be investigating the situation and they know what patrol-man / van combo it was.

Hah, interesting! Hilarious that the AA almost immediately found this post. I bet their Internet web team were doing some kind of SEO stuff and came across it.

AA, if you read this, I'd just like to say that you've been great to me, and my membership has been totally worth already in the 4 months since I joined.

Also, sorry for not replacing the temporary clutch cable your roadside assistance driver gave me - a few months later he had to replace it again. So I apologise for that. He was a great guy.
