PostPosted: 03:32 - 19 Dec 2012    Post subject: Selling panniers. Key issue? Reply with quote

Hi all,

I want to sell the panniers that came with my bike. The rails, panniers e.t.c. are all genuine Triumph parts and will sell for a decent sum.

The problem is, the locks are matched to the ignition key, and I only have two keys. I wouldn't want to give away the 2nd key, partly because then I'd be screwed if I lost mine, and secondly because that poses a large (if unlikely) security risk.

Anyone been in the situation before, or have any advice?

Thanks,
Dan

Sell them without locks or (and I'll admit I have no idea what the key looks like on those bikes), when the buyer comes round change the lock to fit his/her key.

Would take about 20 minutes to strip the lock down, change the internal sliders to fit their key (sanding any that don't quite match up).

Someone posted a tutorial on it a while ago.

I bought all my locks from different places and only had a key with the ignition... so I changed all the pins inside the locks around and now they all work from the same key (petrol cap, seat lock, 2 helmet locks)

Yes they will be worth quite a bit but not so much if the new owner has to go to Triumph to get new lock barrels and matched keys for his bike.

I have that system on my Tiger and the panniers are £500 with matching locks from Triumph. I have no idea what Triumph would charge to replace them with new ones but I bet the price won't be cheap so you will have to factor that into what you sell them for!

Personally, I would take the locks out, put them on ebay auction and hope for the best but from my perspective if I was buying for my Tiger without locks I wouldn't go over a couple of hundred. Any more I'd be down Triumph buying brand new with the matching locks.

Sell them complete with key from a friends eBay account. Then just get a new spare key cut for yourself. Simple.

Take the panniers to a dealer or bike shop get them to take barrels out, then he/she can make them up to their key and put them back in.

You will the need the key to get the barrels out, but they can be made up to any key. We do it a lot here

Get 2 new keys cut at Timpsons, sell panniers as "already sold bike, panniers now going separately" to mitigate the infinitesimal chance that there's a scrote out there who would pay pannier prices just to get a key to your bike, get on with your life.

The locks are impossible to remove from the ST panniers without drilling them out. Luckily, a new set of luggage locks & keys is only around £30.

Take them to a lock smith.

They will be able to take out or replace a couple of the pins.

Or even replace the barrels. The locking mechanisms on paniers isn't exactly complex or in accessible.

Looking at mine you undo a single shim and locking pin if you have it open and the lock just slides out.

Last year I bought some incredibly cheap paniers because they had no keys. £10 to a locksmith and I had two sets of keys.
