Ducati 1098 or Gsxr 1000 L0

I have a slight predicament (a good one ) as i am trying to decide between these two bikes.

Does anyone have experience with either of them, what are your experiences, or even what one would you prefer to own.

I mainly ride sunny weekends and short commutes to work (fair weather only).

My research finds only good reviews for both. My only presumption is that the 1098 might be a tad unreliable in comparison, but just look at it!

Your thoughts please...

No personal experience but was informed on here that Ducatis require frequently expensive repairs.

If I could be a fair weather rider, I'd get a Duc.
For anything else, GSXR would be my choice.

I dont fancy the 1098 being repaired in the garage for half the summer, its short enough as it is. Do you think the reliability is a problem?

If I was going for one... Ducati.

They will need to be looked after and perhaps you'll want to service it to the book... but they sound pretty nice.

Failing that, if you fancy power on tap, all the time. GSXR1000. Only ridden a K4 and K6, K6 gets my vote over anything

GSXR is the tampon of motorbikes
1098 is a stunning bike

Really though they are worlds apart in riding, both sports bike but one has a large sewing machine, whinging away beneath your legs, and the other a thumpy twin, difference between how they work on the road is massive.

Personally I am a V twin man, I prefer how they ride and how there is always power when you need it.

As for Ducatis being unreliable
My 2000 750SS has cost me, a service, 2 x tyres, I replaced the forks (who hasn't done fork seals on a bike of that age) and a chain and sprocket kit. It was parked up for a few months, turned key pressed button fired right up.

Mossys 916 was on 41k miles, don't think he has had any reliability problems

Mate who had 900SS, 748, 748R, 748Senna and never once let him down, took the 748 to Ducati in Italy and back and it lost a single screw on the rear hugger.


This big bills for Ducatis thing is usually a lot of shit, they just cost more to service, where as a GSXR may cost £200 for oil and filter service with valve adjustment, a Ducati is every 2 years or 6k miles and it needs belts and a service so £300-600

If I was a fair weather rider only, and had access to a decent car at all times, I'd choose the Ducati. For every other scenario, the GSXR.

The old Ducati = unreliable is something that is dug up from the 80 and 90s and has no real relevance today.

People that say this have never owned or ridden a modern Duke.


Mine was possibly the most reliable bike ive had, wasnt the fastest probably wasnt even the best handling but it was one of my favourites.

Sounded good, great to ride and bags of character, made you smile when you rode it.

The GSXR1000 i had last is probably the worst bike ive had, sure its very quick and will do everything well.

But its so boring, drab and common, there is nothing special about it and riding it daily was yawn worthy.

If you have the extra money go Duke and you wont regret it.

Service schedule is not 6000

Its every 7500 miles (for a 1098, servicing became cheaper from this model on)

Belts are replaced at 15000 and 30000.

Surprise surprise a Ducati needs to be serviced LESS than a jap bike.

Pull your head out of your asses people.

After the 749/999 Dukes were made cheaper to service, so the 1098 will be reasonable to service.

Its still going to be more than a Jap bike, but less often.

If you can afford it, go for it.

I've got to agree with wave2k here.

Too many people read too much sh!te on the interweb about ducati reliabilty.

Personally speaking, I've found italian bikes in general better looked after then the jap equivalent( I've never bought a new bike so my opinion is only on the secondhand machines I've purchased through the years).

I've found mine (its not a 1098 to be fair) probably one of the most robust bikes i've ever owned.

Service costs are minimal as I do belts etc myself during the summer, I think you can do a "major" service for less than £100 using quality parts.

Agreed the 1098 is too much power for the road the GSXR1000 even more so.

The 848 is perfect for the road, my only dislike for the 848 is its un-Ducati-esqe wet clutch.


But then, Ducati are moving away from the dry clutch anyway with the 1199 Panigale.

If I had to chose I would have to say the GSXR.

My heart would want the Duke because its so much nicer but with our climate the Suzuki would probably fair better. The Duke I wouldnt want to ride in the rain and since I have no garage it would dissolve.

Another vote for the Ducati here, I was excruciatingly close to picking up a 749s when I was shopping around for my Sprint.
