Hi,

I've just bought some used leathers on eBay. They are in good condition but they smell like they have been padded with the contents of an ash tray. As an ex smoker i know what stale smoke smells like and i know what ash trays smell like. This smells like an ash tray!

So, i'm looking for ideas on how i can clean them up and neutralise the smell.

I'm thinking fa-breeze or neuotradol and leave it hanging for a few days in fresh air?

Any other ideas on how i can make the leather look fresher.

One type of febreeze has a fairly neutral smell supposed to be 'cotton' I think.
Mainly they want real breeze round, them like hung outside on a sunny windy day, or just wearing them on the bike will help.

It will be the lining that is holding the smell as much as the leather.

Fill an old nylon stocking with fresh, dry coffee grounds (straight from the can). Place this inside of the [purse] leathers and allow it to set until the odor is gone. Coffee grounds absorb odors quickly and effectively.

Should be interesting.

Start smoking again and you won't smell it.

Second hand leathers can be such a bargain. I got me some AGVSport 2 piece leathers in excellent condition for £10.50. Got some Gaerne GRT boots (£150RRP I think?) for £20. Love eBay.

I found giving them a proper scrub on the outside with leather cleaner and inside just spraying oust / febreeze neutral room odours worked well, over time it just smelt like fresh laundry.

Heh. My new Dainese leathers smelled like some kind of aftershave.

I read that exact article and tried all of that bollocks on a musty, stinking old jacket with sod all success. In particular, the suggestion that odor absorbers like coffee and such can passively "suck" more smell out are UFO-science ridiculous, although in the spirit of Mythbusting I gave them a try to see if it's possible to create a "smell vacuum" (spoiler: it's not, muppets)

What worked for me was just hanging it out in moving air at every opportunity, and wearing it on the bike. We're talking days or weeks: leather is porous, it took some time for that smell to get in there, it's going to take some time to get out.
