Now, with any luck, tomorrow I am going to buy my partner a helmet, but I was wondering if they are legally required to wear one?

As I say, he will be wearing one when on my bike but its more curiosity than anything else.

Sad thing is, I'll be stuck with a crappy "nitro" lid and he'll be sporting a brand new Duccini lid.

Keeps hinting about dragging me up to leavestone studios harry potter tour so the lids his Xmas present. Also because I have to pillion him to my families for xmas.

Only a few days for both of us to learn ridding with/as pillion

Guile, my partner is not a she and neither am I.

Cimbian, my mod 2 questions was checking oil, tires, adjustments made to take a pillion, how to use the horn and how to check the lights.

The adjustments was the only pillion related question I was asked. Although if I WAS asked, I would have guessed yes.

Thanks guys, I thought it would be, but just wanted clarification.

I'm lucky in that we use the same size helmet, my current fits him right so I should be able to try on the new one and get the right size, if not, can always pillion down to the shop and get it swapped for the right size I guess.

Definitely do need a helmet for each rider. I hate having to refuse a lift to friends because I don't have the spare helmet with me.

Riding without a helmet is non-endorsable as far as I know, so it's a fine, no points. Carrying a pillion in an unsafe manner is a potential endorsable offence I believe. So if you only have one helmet and for some silly reason decide to risk it, give your pillion the helmet and make sure you're the one that goes without. Very Happy

Pillion legally requires a helmet.

Interesting note, pillion doesn't legally have to sit facing forwards. They're allowed to sit facing backwards so long as their feet are on the pegs. I wonder how long that would last before you got tugged by the police though.

No, probably not. Helmets are rarely returned/exchanged. How do they know you haven't dropped it?

Thanks again fellas.

Big Dan, your barely worth the text on the screen so I wont say anymore on the matter Wink

I wouldnt ride with a pillion who didn't have a helmet either way, was just curious if it was actual law or not.

They may accept it back as it would have only been gone 10/15 minutes and the guy who runs the shop is level headed and pretty decent. Had a nice chat with him today about the bikes in his forecourt.

I heard the other way round. One can't be facing the other way, but both could be facing backwards. It could be (and most likely is) bollocks.

it also says they don't have to sit behind you, so if you had footpegs in front of your controls you could carry a small child in front of you.
although this would be a fucking stupid idea.

I know, and considering how lethal the roads of Asia are, one off at anything over 40 and some, if not all, of them won't be going home.

There you go again, treacle. There was no mention of you in that sentence, merely that (presumably) he would put his helmet in his pillion, who is a she. Nothing to talk about you or which sex you prefer.

This is the most annoying thing about homosexual people - they turn everything into a story about them and their gayness.

I was about to go on and say you don't see heterosexual people going on about shagging all the time and how they are heterosexual etc etc. But guile has somewhat muted that point in this post!

And back on topic. Seriously? You are allowed to ride a motorcycle now, and you have to ask whether you need a helmet to be on one in the UK? You really were at the back of the line when the good lord was handing out the skills, weren't you?
