I'm selling something on Gumtree for £360. What would be the safest payment method for me? Would it be PayPal through a gift payment? How about a bank transfer, how safe are they?

I don't know the guy I'm selling to so obviously I'm a little bit cautious.

Obviously cash would be the safest option but he lives quite far from me.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Paying cash into your bank account.

It does away with fake cash issues.

Seriously?
Bitcoins may well be the most anonymous, but I doubt they'll be the most secure.

If you can't do cash in hand then bank transfer will be easiest. I wouldn't touch paypal for those kinds of sums.

Lol @ bitcoins. The poor guy will be ripping his hair out trying to figure out how in the hell you're supposed to buy them. It's just not practical. Bank transfer is about as good as you can get though, once it's in your account it's pretty much staying there.

So with a bank transfer, what information have I got to give them?

And why is PayPal gift payment not as safe? I read somewhere that it was.

Bank transfer, the buyer will need your account number and sort code. Paypal gift offers no buyer protection but should be ok for the seller.

If he's using a hacked (can i have your login details please sir because i've dropped my phone into your account and need to get it back out) account and pays you with it then paypal will take the money back from you when its noticed missing.

Guy asked what was most secure for seller, not easiest for buyer.

Yes but I am sure he also wanted a practical solution. Bitcoins just aren't. It's not actually even secure, lots of Bitcoins were stolen and people lost their money and it involves placing trust in the exchange. As someone else said, Bitcoins are anonymous, not secure. Totally unsuitable for this kind of transaction!

Recently sold my iPad for £350-£400ish, can't remember exactly, just asked for it in cash.

My bitcoins are in an exchange for 30-60 seconds before they are moved to a wallet. I don't leave them there in case they do get hacked. The company that did was dodgy anyway. Companies I use seem to have a good few year reputation in other financial services as well.

If you want simple easy and safe for both parties.

How about PayPal with recorded delivery? Can they still claim it back even with proof that the item has been received?
