So we recently moved. We had Sky package and generally worked fine. But when we come to Sky moving everything to the new place, they thought it great customer service that they couldn't move the Broadband/Phone for 4 weeks!! Evil or Very Mad

So we rang Virgin. They could install everything on the day we moved, great we thought.

What an utter pile of wank the wireless signal is!

Countless calls to Virgin to no avail.

The mrs spoke to her mate and happened to mention it. She had exactly the same problem and has went through 5 Shitty Hubs. In the end she was told to plug in a "wireless sender" and use the Super Hub in modem mode.
She has had no wireless signal issue since.

Can someone explain/ebay link what a "wireless sender" is please?

I tried it on e-bay and i'm just getting TV signal sender things Crying or Very sad

I think Wireless Access Point is the term you're seeking.

Known problem with the superhubs. Many people upgrade to them, set the hub to modem mode and use the wireless router that they had with their old cable modem package to serve the wifi.

Most wireless routers will work in this manner - it's called 'transparent bridge' or 'wireless bridge' mode. All you have to do is pick one.

NP and you are a fool.
In that order Very Happy

I'm still rocking 3 of them with DD-WRT firmware and they are going strong.

Hmmm, Thinking

I've still got the old router I was originally given when I got Virgin (Netgear one I think). Would I be able to use that? My wireless signal is terrible now since setting up this Superhub.

Yeppers,

set hub to Modem Mode, connect cable from #1 on hub to the internet socket on the netgear.

I've opened various Superhubs now.

The antenna inside (2 of them..) are literally 2 bits of wire and a small circuit board.

They are terrible, definite known issue and modem only mode is pretty much the only fix.

I do not use wireless so never needed to change to that though.

You will find that most, if not all, wifi routers that do not have external antennas will be the same.
Laptops are the same, mini wifi card with a couple of wires that run round the screen.

the superhub works flawlessly on the 5Ghz band. My laptop is in the loft. Router is on the bottom floor. Still max out the internet connection on the 60 meg package Very Happy
The 2.4 GHz band is utter wank. I do believe the problem is in the firmware though. Can't remember the exact settings, but there was one on the 2.4Ghz band that worked, iirc I think it was with no encryption Shocked

Just FYI - It's actually BT Openreach's crap service to Sky that causes the 4 week delay, Openreach are the only company in the UK that can install a non virgin phone line...

Well, it wasn't until I set it all back up again and got a speedtest result of 20MB, that I realised the reason I did away with the original router was because it couldn't handle more than 20, and I'm on the 30MB line now.

 extraordinaire

You'll not see more than 28mb over a 54g connection.

The superhubs wireless antennas are nothing like the laptop ones, at least the laptops have their own wireless cards, these are just a stripped out 834DG with some updated parts on like gig ports Laughing

Working with Virgin Media helps when you complain about the shitehub Laughing

My wired PC gets the stated speeds all day long which is a bonus Thumbs Up

Orly and I worked @ VM for a while.

Just took this pic.
In the top left you will see the dedicated mini wifi card and 2, yes 2, antennas.
They are not connected to "circuit boards" that is the actual antenna that sends and receives the signal.
Well, actually one will usually receive and the other will send.

is that a generic wifi antenna set for a laptop?
Yes, yes it is.

Damn guy has lots of time on his hands Laughing

The only laptops I've opened are the Acer 6920 and a Lenovo T420.

Both of which had 2 wires from the wireless card on the mobo to a stupidly big antenna, not the shitty virgin media ones Thumbs Up

Waiting on a white van man so i can get my desk from the garage and setup my command centre and control the internets.

The antennae on the laptops you looked at will probably have the same amount/length of trace on the board when compared to the ones pictured above.

This^

I have the Superhub, 60mb connection and even using the laptop, upstairs at the other side of the house..I can still get 56/58.

I can't fault it really. It's been sound since it was hooked up.

I've tried 5Ghz, both the Mac and Nexus connect ok, get around 80mb out of the 120mb.

The T420, T61 and Xoom do not connect. Point blank refuse.

Good kit cisco. The last one I had (a long time ago) came with an undocumented 'set yourself on fire' feature. That was a good afternoon! Smile

The printed circuit board at the end is the antenna, the cable between looks like a cheap SMA/MMCX cable which is a shielded cable. The circuit board is called a patch antenna. The physical length of the cabling will effect the signal strength and if the cable is cut with a big tolerances then it could well cancel the signals out. Also looks to be made with typical cheap chinese lead free solider.
