No serious reason, when compared to alcohol.

Still it isn't harmless but I'd rather have a town full of pot addled stoners milling around than a bunch of lary drunk arseholes.

Plus lifelong heavy pot smokers are just goldfish memoried zombies instead of objectionable alcy twats.

I thought one of the best arguments was that THC isn't addictive like opiate-based stuff is. Regardless, I'm glad I only ever had a thing for draw and never got into brown or owt like it.

On the main, both substances are relatively harmless. Morphine's addictive properties can cause problems, but whether they can be called harmful is a question of semantics. I think it is harmful, but it is certainly arguable.

With pot though, there is a small percentage of people - probably not as small as you think - who have THC induced psychotic episodes. Not really running around with a kitchen knife screaming at cheese, more sudden panic attacks which are coupled with waking nightmares, memory loss and a sense of disassociation. I tend to think of this as being harmful.

Not just relating an anecdote here, my wife was a heavy pot smoker for years before I met her and stopped after being hospitalised after a series of them.

The common thread between the harmful effects of THC and Morphine though, is that taken in moderation, both substances are either completely harmless or beneficial. It's only when they are over used over a prolonged period that problems arise.

Interestingly though, Methadone isn't just legal, but is used to allegedly wean people off a heroin addiction. Weird, considering it is far more addictive than heroin.

Still, perhaps the point made in smegballs initial post is relevant. Heroin, as a morphine based drug can't be patented, Methadone was invented by the Nazi's during the second world war as a morphine substitute, so is completely artificial and therefore is patentable.

Shame it's a shit drug though.

Interesting - I did think though that heroin was strictly speaking a trade name created by Bayer. But yeah not sure about how patenting would work there. So will shut up now. Razz

Morphine is ace. I've had it intravenously on two occasions.

Can't be patented by big pharma? You're wrong there as that's exactly what GW Pharmaceuticals are doing with Sativex.

Yep - had a skin pop of pethadine once. Spent the afternoon in a blissful state. Felt like I'd been on holiday after that, no lie.

It's Dihydrogen Monoxide that's the real killer. We're all addicted to it.

Got to love morphine. I remember first time I had it I had un-bearable back pain. the normal pain killers didn't help one bit. So they decided to give me morphine. I remember the doctor putting the needle in me then going cloud nine, best high ever.
Then last year when I was in hospital after my crash I was given it on a button to self administer. For that reason I don't remember being in intensive care, I was too high. My brother said there was a monitor or something and it said on it i'd pressed the button around 50 times in half an hour, but there was a limit of something like 5 an hour.
I can see how it's addictive.

a ridiculous amount of deaths associated to it as well. far too easy to misuse this often overlooked solvent.

All drugs should be legalised and regulated.

Pot smokers should enjoy it
Opiate users shouldn't per persecuted by society
Use of any other drug is 100% fine unless it is abused.

Which is a whole different thing. The pot / panic attack thing is like people getting violent when drinking, just don't drink.
Opiates and other drugs are insanely addictive and most of the social "issues" caused by opiates are the face people cannot regulate their in take.

USE not ABUSE.

Also Valium which is nice.
