I am going to have a look at a YZ 250 over the next few days which I will use mainly for greenlaning.

Excuse my total lack of experience in such matter so I have a couple of questions:

I have never owned a 2 stroke before (not strictly true- I had one as a boy but my dad sorted fuel etc. out)

If I buy this bike I would have to ride it home 80 odd miles. I have never premixed fuel myself-I have read that 32:1 is a good premix ratio to use for this bike- this is google search advice so would like a second oppinion. Would you agree with this?

Also- can I buy any 2 stroke oil to run it on? For example just standard two stroke oil from the petrol station- mix it and away I go?

Thanks,

Chris

use fully-synthetic oil in a YZ

https://www.opieoils.co.uk/pv-952-castrol-power-1-racing-2t-fully-synthetic-2-stroke-motorcycle-oil-1-litre.aspx?utm_source=ProductSearch&utm_medium=GoogleBase&utm_campaign=GoogleBase_ProductsFeed&utm_content=952

32:1 sounds safe, this Castrol Oil will run a bit leaner if need be. Ask the previous owner what he's been running it at, and go with that.

My worry is I am going to see the bike in a couple of days so won't be able to get anything specific from the internet in time.
Maybe the owner will have some he can spare but if not will I be able to get something from a standard fuel station that will get me home and not adversly affect the bike?

Should be able to get something half decent from Halfords.

80 miles is a good bit of distance on a competition motocross bike.

I didn't think of Halfords. I will have a look at what they have got.

Thanks,

Chris

Yes I'm in Witney. Did think about wheelers but was planning on going Boxing day and they would have been closed.
The deal fell through anyway though.

Although I have now won a KTM.

Thanks for offer of help- let you know if I am ever in need.

Likewise, I'm more than happy to help you if I am able.

Chris

Mate, I've had a few YZ250s and 80 miles is too far to ride on one. If it lasts the distance it will need a rebuild and I'm not sure the gearbox would take it as it's not really designed for that much road use.

Try to borrow a van

Edit: just seen your post. Ignore this
