The key on the bottom of the laptop sometimes doesn't work. I've had varying success.

Microsoft, the money robbing thieves, create different types of licences for different types of installations.

Installation CDs take different licences to Upgrade CDs... which take different licences to manufacturer licensed CDs... etc.

The key that I legitimately bought from Microsoft for Windows 7 stopped working when I did a fresh install using my upgrade CD. The error was that my key wasn't valid for this kind of install (despite doing it before). I had to hack the OS to get it to work despite having paid for a key.

If they think that I'm ever going to legitimately buy a product from them again after that... just lol. Laughing

Unfortunately the code on the bottom of my laptop is mostly rubbed off - you can get tools that will find the code that your installation of windows uses.
Used this and it came out with a different code - reinstalled fine.

I've used magic jelly bean (key finder), a few times to find serial numbers (although it seems to have changed to magical jelly bean now)

HAHA funny you mention that, I used that on a couple of business machines when I needed new keys. Problem solved. only hard bit is finding a easily accessible machine that runs the same OS.

But its fantastic bit of software.

Little tip when reinstalling Vista/7 using the license key on the machine. If the activation wizard refuses to activate the key:

Click on change product key.

Leave the new key box blank and just click on next.

It'll ask you if you want to activate your current product key, click ok/next.

Hey presto, one genuine properly activated windows, no cracks required Thumbs Up

That 'quirk' has been in there pretty much since the day Vista was released and MS appear to have no intention of ever fixing it. Whilst I tend not to be one for conspiracy theories, the fact that it proudly displays a 'buy a genuine windows key' whilst refusing to activate a completely legitimate and valid product key has me taking the Hetzer stance on this one. Sub human robbing scum etc Wink

Wish I had known about that.

I ended up installing with no key, then going in to the registry to change my "type" of installation to work with the key I legitimately bought.

Sod them if they think I'll be doing that again. It's less effort to download it for free.
