Am cutting short my stay in London and heading back to Dorset. Andre-the-dog, my faithful pal, a real character and scapegoat for anyone in the house who farted for the last 13 years, has gone into kidney and liver failure. He is so scared of the vets that I am going to bring him home and the vet will come round tomorrow to put him down. Am so sad. Good thing is am girlie, so don't care who sees me crying.

It is always a hard thing to do, but when you know it is the right thing it does bring some comfort in knowing you have done your best and done it with love.

Sorry to hear this. I know how much it sucks. Lost both of my dogs within a couple of months of each other. Vet had to come round for both. Just one note, it's not pleasant, you might want to lay a face cloth over his teeth

I cried like a baby for each of them Sad

I had my dog put to sleep at home a few years ago.

She was 14 and had kidney failure.

Waiting for the vet to arrive was horrible but the injection just put her to sleep peacefully in my arms. Much better than having it done at the vets - Andre will be much calmer.

I also cried like a baby (have got something in my eye now).

I feel for you, MCW.

My Golden Retriever is pretty-much my only friend and as I work from home I am with him much of the day. He is 12 now but getting frail. I know the time is coming soon and am dreading it.

Know that you are doing what is best.

My best friend has a life expectancy of 12-15 years (Cairne Terrier) the last little guy lasted till he was twelve, this little guy is twelve so I know I haven't that long left, 3-5 years, but I know that they will be happy years for us both.

It really is one of the most difficult decisions you have to make. You're doing the right thing having the vet come round and do things where your dog feels relaxed and comfortable - I did the same with ours a few years ago. Heartbreaking, but over in seconds while I was cuddling him and reassuring him.

Pro-tip: Put a blanket down, they tend to leak a bit afterwards.

I feel for you MCW. I've gone through this as well and you have my sympathy. It's the only thing you can do when they are in pain and distressed.

^^
This

Not a nice thing to have to do but the last act of kindness, as they say.

Much better for them to go out peacefully, than suffering and making them hang on 'til they go themselves.
It's the right thing to do, and you mustn't think of it as killing him, but letting him go.

I really do feel for you.

+1000000000000000

It's acceptable to see when an animal you love is in pain and make the hard decision of putting them to sleep to stop all the un-necessary pain.

Switch that around, it's not ok to do that for a human, you have to let them suffer and watch it go on and on.

Both me, my sister and my dad all think the same. We've all given orders that should we end up spazzed from bike accidents or whatever, do the decent thing and put us down.

Never had a dog, so can't offer first hand sympathies. I imagine it's the inevitable day of dread for every dog owner. Shame our lifespans are so out of sync Sad

Well i'll put it here in print that if I ever end up in a vegetative state I want putting down.

I hope you'd that for me BCF, I know some of you would love to
And no, i'm not a vegetable yet!

I'm really not afraid of death, i'm actually very much intrigued by it, it's life's greatest mystery!

We had to have our Boxer put down, Harvey.
The older dog (Oscar my baby from when I was 2 years old Crying or Very sad ) passed in his sleep from old age and after that Harvey got worse and worse, developed a brain tumor that was pushing his eyes out and caused him to go blind, he went crazy and ate his way through a stained glass door (through the glass) blood everywhere when we got home and we found him in someones front garden which had a pathetic little fence around it but he couldn't get out because he couldn't find the way out and he looked terrified.

Lol actually welling up at work, i'll shut up now Razz

I have had two dogs put down over the course of my life. One when I was about 8 and the other about 3 years ago. Both of them were some of the hardest things I've ever had to deal with.

To ease our friends suffering is the reason we do it, yet that never seems to make it any easier.

Sad! You just have to think it's what's best for 'em. Still obviously a tough call though. But he will have had a good innings and a load of love from yourself. Will you be having another or don't you know yet?

It is really shit. Such is life.

Oh for fuck sake. Can you not make a nice sentiment without making a jibe about 'darkies'?

In fact don't answer that. I can't be arsed to see this thread turn into one all about you, again Thumbs Up
