so working security, i took out the unlimited download internet addon to my phone contract so i could tether it and watch movies, boxing etc whilst at work.

it's been fine since i took it out in like may, returning better speeds than my home broadband, anywhere from 3.5m to 6m depending on the site i'm working on.

recently though, despite the same full 4 bar hsdpa signal showing on the handset, i'm now getting 0.1-0.2m download speed... and even webpages are lagging so slow that images often fail. for example, on this page, some of the emoticons on the left have failed to download due to what i presume is a timeout of some sort.

here's my latest speed test result

https://www.speedtest.net/result/2398147271.png

i don't think i'm being limited due to fair useage, i have a friend n same network who uses it more than me and when he goes past a certain point, he says they text him, and then he's just unable to load videos during peak hours, but everything else remains the same. this isn't what mine behaves like, so i think it's something different.

i'm on t-mobile btw, any ideas what i can do to get the speed back to where it was?

There is no such thing as unlimited data. All have fair usage policies and almost all forbid tethering.

Quote:
What is the Fair Use Policy for Mobile Broadband and Internet on your phone?

Devices this applies to

Fair use policy

that is not my terms, my phone came with 500mb. and the "unlimited" states that i get an "extra 1.5gb"

so while it's not unlimited, it's certainly not like the quote.

Well the most likely cause is that you're being throttled.
Try running a speed test and see if the speed picks up. Most sensible ISP's don't throttle the speed tests ever.
The other explanations are that your phone is using the rest of your bandwidth on other things like an update, or that the mobile network is very busy. It's possible a fault with another providers network is putting additional load on yours.

There will be a big surge in usage for a few days, with probably millions of new devices connected since the 25th and owners trying to do things.

It's not them just being dicks though. The truth is that data costs money So when they call it unlimited* what they actually mean is that it's more than a typical person needs / it's more data than you could use browsing all day long.
But of course the people attracted to that package are the peer2peer downloaders who want to rack up 1000GB a month Laughing

i know/never claimed it's real unlimited. my contracted unlimited limit is 2gb on paper. but like i said, the way t-mobile limit my pal is totally different to how mine is behaving, so i don't think it's that.

it could be the christmas thing, it's been probably a week to 10 days of being dire. not sure how likely though. i guess also people are at home spending time with family all mooching the internet too.

i've spoken to a few people local and they say theirs is slower than normal, but nothing like as slow as mine's gone.

there are a couple of truly unlimited packages. i believe t-mobile specifically state in their terms that their full monty package has completely unlimited data allowance. there's another one but i cant remember who it's with. and the giff gaff one turned out to be bullshit didn't it?

unfortunately, i'm not on those tariffs so it's not relevant anyway.

have sent them a message, see what they say. it slowed down to a lesser extent before around the time the EE stuff rolled out, and when i complained they did something and it sped up again until now. so perhaps i'm just caught in some glitch to do with that again
