Misfire problem.

Hi guys,
My wife's having problems with her nsr125. She told me while riding in 3rd or 4th gear at about 5,000 rpm the bike would momentarily lose power then fire up again as normal within a split second. It did this fairly often too. I've recently fit a new clutch cable which did pull on the choke cable but I've since rerouted it.
I took out the sparkplug which was dry and sooty (too rich) and bought a new one. Her problem still exists although today it died and now it won't fire

It normally fires up straight away. Could the coil have died? Could that have been the missfire problem? How much is a new coil?

I've also noticed the choke cable has split so I've ordered a new one but it seems to screw into the top of the carb. How do you change it? I don't want to completely dismantle the carb if I can get away with it.

I'm hopefully getting a haynes manual sometime this week but I want to make a start asap so she can go to work on it again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The choke cable on my NSR is held in the carb by one screw, undo that and the whole choke slide comes out of the carb. Easy as pie to change, and no carb dismantling necessary... Cant help you with the starting problem, other than to suggest you check the normal sequence of spark, fuel and compression all present, and then scratch your chin for a bit

I stripped the bike down today to check the reeds. Someone told me that they may be staying slightly open making it too rich. They seemed perfectly fine to me. The carb is spotless too. I'm hoping it's the choke cable not fully turning the choke off cos it's knackered The choke assembly looked clean too.

I put the old sparkplug back in and it started first time While the plug was out I tested for a spark. The new plug (ngk 9)had a weak spark compared to the old one(ngk 7). I took the plug back to the shop for a replacement but he was very reluctant to replace it. I only bought it 3 days ago ffs Anyway time for a test ride.

[Edit] Putting back the old plug and rerouting the clutch cable away from the choke cable seems to have solved the problem
