So, I'm sure pleanty of people around here are aware of this, but yesterday I picked up a new webcam so I can make video logs of build progress on the Enterprise model.

Now its a Logitech C270 HD webcam.

It has motion detection recording with the software.

So I thought given the recent thefts from garages this could be quite handy!

USB can have 3m cables on them if memory serves, so you could place the camera in the top corner at the back of the garage and use a usb cable to a really cheap ass pc hidden somewhere with a decent size hdd in it.

720 pixel motion detection triggered cctv recording.

Just a thought for those on a budget really.

A cheap pc can be bought off ebay for under £100. It only needs usb 2.0 and a good size hard drive in it. CPU and RAM is quite redundant in this application.

However, shove some cheapy speakers on it and a wifi card then you have music in your garage too for when your working on the bike.

You can get 10m 'active' USB extensions for longer range. Look them up on ebay.

Thats good to know! Thanks!

The only down side would be that it has no IR/night vision on the C270. But for £20 (sale price, pc world) its not to bad. If you have a PIR flood light in the garage then its redundant point.

Jesus someones been working on removing the USB limitations then!

Still, I really can't find fault with the C270 webcam. I was actually very surprised by the increased quality of it.

If you're of the geek, then Zoneminder is an excellent solution - it's free, runs on a headless Linux PC, with a server based distro, no desktop environment needed, has excellent motion detection algorithms, really good web interface you can access anywhere, can FTP (for remote storage), email logged events, integrate with X10 etc. I have it working with IP cams but it supports capture cards and anything else that works with video For Linux, which is almost everything.

Sounds good. Not sure how I'd power the laptop though beyond its battery power without running a ridiculously long extension cord and leaving the front door ajar to let it through.

Could just use an IPCam and therefore you only have to have the camera in the garage and you can dial in live whenever you want via a pc or your smartphone.

or just wack a hole in the wall of the garage and house, feed an extension cord between them with some armoured sheath or pvc pipe, silicone sealant around the brickwork and pipe.

USB extension cables will have less quality at longer lengths, it is recommended not to go higher than a 5m extension to retain signal quality.

hope this helps.

Motion detection software isn't so good for outside as it get's constantly triggered by the weather. Some software can compensate for it, others just fill your hdd.
