How transferable is the UK driving/riding license? I have full A/B/B1 entitlement (car/bike).

I assume that within the EU, you're pretty much golden, but how about outside of that? Is the general rule a complete retake, or a small conversion course, or it's just accepted?

Does any of this change if you take up permanent residency?

Cheers. I realise the question I'm asking is quite broad, but I'm toying with the idea of jumping ship after finishing University. Lots of other hurdles to get over, but throwing away 2 grand in lessons/test fees would be a slight annoyance.

edit: In fact, within the EU, how difficult is it to import a vehicle?
Could I use my 30 day EU insurance to ride to a member state country, rent a place, re-register the vehicle, job done?

I will be undergoing the Belgian importation process, starting in January. It is fairly straight forward(ish) if your vehicle has a CoC (Certificate of Conformity). If not, a technical inspection of sorts is required and can take up to 2 months to do.

For Belgium, you have to register your bike within 6 months of registering yourself in your local town & getting a residents card. My eBike insurance cover is valid for 365 days within the EU - there is no "30 day EU cover" restriction like most other policies. So I will be using that and simply redirecting my mail to my mother in the UK so I can pretend I'm still resident there. Wink

In your case, it's a bit of a grey area as your insurance will only be valid if you remain residing in the UK. Once you've registered your vehicle in the other country, you'd need to get insurance asap. Where are you considering moving to?

I'm pretty sure that a UK license is enough to apply for an International Driving License (which can include motorcycle entitlement), but the level of acceptance is totally variable from one country to another. I believe that in the US, one of these and a UK license is sufficient. On the other hand, Vietnam doesn't accept it (or the licenses of any other countries for that matter).

You need to find out information based on where, specifically, you want to go.

As of yet, I don't really have anywhere specific in mind. Probably either an English-speaking country (US, NZ, Canada) or somewhere within the EU, though.

It's not necessary that I keep the bike, either, it'd just reduce the hassle of moving quite a bit if I didn't have to redo my bike test.

It seems that any UK-produced vehicles in the past decade or so would have a CoC by default, but is there anything to worry about with emissions regulations? The CB doesn't meet the current standard, it's grandfathered in.
