Thanks for this. Going to look at (and try on) the MT Revenge. I know people say the Sharp test is not very reliable but it must count for something? No?

I have an MT revenge helm and it's brilliant, it's a perfect fit. However the airflow can be a problem, but other than that it's a good helmet

Its a Crash hat.... it dont make you safe, it dont do very much at all, until you CRASH... where IF you are lucky..... it MIGHT mean that you are hurt a little LESS than you might have been without one.
In some crashes may make bog all odds... you fall over, without hitting anything and dont bang your head on the floor, its not done anything; you come off at speed and slide a few hundred meters along tarmac.... you might bang your bonce on the deck, and it might save some grazes from rubbing your face away.
If you fugg up an e-stop and slide in the the rear bumper of an Audi...and 'stitch' his boot-glass.... will probably save you a BIT of a head-ache.
If you run wide on a corber being a bit too exubherent and run head-on into a ballast lorry coming the other way..... your FUCKED pretty much whatever you have on your head.
And in ANY situation where a crash-hat may or may not be of benefit, the first thing I will think, if I have time to think at all will most certainly not be "Oh! I'm so glad I bought the one with the extra Sharpe Rating Star! This is going to hurt SO much less!"
Its gonna hurt. <- that thing, at the end... FULL STOP!

You go buy a hat for two reasons.

1/ Government say if you want to ride a motorbike on the public roads, you HAVE to wear one that they approve of......... or they will fine you

2/ Because if you come a cropper....... it MIGHT help reduce your hurt a bit. How much is in the lap of the gods.... but for the most part... it cant hurt.

Then.... you might consider the fact that riding hatless, wind in your hear, bugs in your teeth..... its NICE..... but.... well, you cant see so well squinting into the wind making your eyes water..... sun-glasses help, but wind whips past the edges and aren't very practical..... goggles are better, but a helmet visor a lot more convenient!

So, sharpe tests..... in fact what of the BS or EU approval standards? What do they mean?

Well, the MINIUM standard is set by the EU standards for a hat to actually BE a 'Motorcycle Helmet'.... not a party hat, kids dress-up costume, or something to keep your head warm.

If its sold for use on a motorbike, it meets THAT standard (or legally ought to)

Whether any particular hat might or might not perform 'better' in any real world accident scenario, as said is pretty much in the lap of the gods.

Sharpe ratings sort of try and see if any one hat is in any way 'better' than another.... becouse price alone is not a very good indication....

Some very expensive hats, you are paying very little for 'more' protection (if that is possible) but for the brand name, qualifty of finish, luxuary of lining and comfort or features etc.

Some cheap hats can perform VERY well in some accident scenario's very poorly in others.

And testing, cant consider every single concievable accident situation, or how much a hat might save you from.

They are; 'interesting'... they are NOT hugely valuable, and NOT what ought to be influencing your buying decission.

What ought to influence your buying desission is

DOES IT FIT YOUR HEAD!

Becouse a hat that fits WORKS; a hat that dont WONT no matter what fucking approvals or ratings it has, and beyond that, its a LOTTERY as to what might or might not work better in any particular accident, and even MORE of a lottery as to whether that 'little' bit better any one hat may offer will save you any REAL pain, let alone death or seriouse injury!

So what we cant influence or plan for we must accept; and deal with what we can in the here and now.

You fall off, that crash, you are worrying about, is seconds of use... critical seconds for sure..... BUT

For probably 99% of your helmets life... it will be sat on a shelf, or in a cupboard or wherever.

For less than 1% of its life, it will be on your head... but that's still likely to be a couple of hours a day.

The important thing here, then, is whether its comfortable; doesn;t crush your ears, or squash your forehead; cut intop the back of yoru kneck, pinch your temples; itch, or make you claustrophobic...

in short

DOES IT FIT YOUR HEAD!

After that? Do you LIKE it!

It's REALLY that simple. And what some-one else likes and finds comfy, you may not. We all have different shaped heads and different preferences.

So, STOP THINKING - START DOING - and go make your OWN decisions that are best for YOU, and learn to live with the choices you make.

All people have different shape heads. The helmet is safe only if it fits well your head. You NEED TO GO AND try it in the shop.

See how to fit here: https://sharp.direct.gov.uk/content/how-fit-your-helmet

Be careful with helmets without Pinlock fitting system, I do not see Aikido supporting it?

It is good idea to buy a helmet that has a visor that supports Pinlock system, long story short if you are riding during rain which happens in UK you will need to fit special Pinlock visor insert in order to prevent visor fogging.
