Hey guys, I've searched far and wide and still haven't managed to come up with the answer so I'm hoping someone here might be able to help.

I have an '03 GS500E and I'm looking to either buy a new engine or a complete head for it however I'm only managing to find parts from 97 etc, will a 97 engine line up with the engine mounts of a 03 or will a complete head from a 97 fit a 03 engine?

Thanks for your help

How come you're looking at getting a new engine/head?

The GS500 as a bike hasn't really changed much over its life. I currently have forks from an earlier 90s E model on my 04 F model. The engine of the earlier models and the later models are very similar. I have an 04 F engine in the garage which I'm repairing for my bike and an engine from an earlier 90s E bike which I bought for spares.

A visual observation of the heads suggests that they're exactly the same and interchangeable. I cannot guarantee that it will fit however.

For a definite answer I'd head over to: https://gstwins.com/gsboard/

They seem to know virtually everything about the bike over there Thumbs Up

Thanks Smile I have registered for there a couple of days ago but an admin still hasn't approved my request lol from my searches it does appear I can fit any engine up to an 09 model.

The reason being is I picked up an '03 GS500 for £200 as my first restricted bike but had a few engine parts missing, just cheaper to replace the whole engine and get a complete running GS for £350-450 Smile

EDIT: bought a full running 97 engine for £170 so costing me a total of £370 to get it on the road.

What parts are missing? Smile

Took a couple of days for mine to be approved too. But yeah, I believe that you can just interchange the engines between different years, but I'm not an expert on the subject Smile

the F models (the ones with fairings) had an oil cooler, other than that the carbs changed along with the ignition pickups at some point but fitting wise they stayed the same
