Just wondering if i should care about the possibility of my sills getting bended over. It's only a 10 year old Nissan Almera, and i couldn't give two hoots about how the sills look cosmetically, but i am planning to do plenty of work on it/repairs on it myself, and the support points are basically the sills. The sills are intact at the moment, and if they get bent over, will it make supporting the car on axle stands harder?

There's one garage that i know always puts it up on the lift no matter what, so the sills won't get bent, and another that's quite happy to jam a jack under the sill to get the wheel just high enough off the ground to change the tyre.

The though of using the jacking points on sills makes me feel ill. I always jack the subframe using a trolley jack.

If you can avoid it, I suggest you do.

I support my car on the sill jacking points but raise it using a trolley jack. Sills should survive fine unless they are already knackered through rusting etc. On my old car the sill points were rusted to buggery and would have failed epically if used to support the car.

Trolley jack and axle stands anywhere except the sills.

My mate is a fireman, he's had to drag a couple of corpses out from under cars.

Years ago I was lucky when a jack went through the sill of a car I was working on.

I appreciate your concern but... As the official points for axle stands are the sills (the jacking point is in the centre, just rear of the front cross member), and the Haynes supports this, where would you propose i use? Bearing in mind i don't know which bits are properly reinforced and which aren't, and i have a 2002 Nissan Almera (pics? Anybody?)

As you'll only get a crappy scissor jack with the car to enable wheel changes, the sill points have to be the official points really. IMO the manufacturer will only be fussed that these will suffice during the warranty period.

Any point clear of pipes or wiring along the front or rear subframe should be fine. Axle stands sit under there much more happily than on a sill jacking point too.

I quickly check to see if the sills are rotten, then happily jack cars up on sills unless I know the car and know of good places further under (assuming my big jack or lift will reach)

Never had an issue, and all sills are strong at the jacking points.

dont use the sump Laughing

i know someone who did

also know a place round here that just fits tyres and they use trolly jacks to lift the cars

i use them but try to take wheel into the place

last time there was an audi up in the air with four jacks on a slight hill Shocked Shocked Shocked

never had a sill move as they seem to have a solid bit for the jack to fit onto
