Might have come across one...

Would be nice to have it road legal, I know it can be a ball ache, but what is required/where do I need to go first?

For all references, its a 2005.

Has it been road legal in the past?

Ride did a bit this month about putting a bike through the M-thingy test and there's quite a lot that it needs. I'll see if I can find a link to their article for you Thumbs Up

Edit - I hope this works, I'm using my iPod Sad

its on page 18/19 of their free sample bit

First of all make sure its a 2005, alot of them are earlyer models being passed on as 05's, check frame numbers with a local dealer, ive seen countless 03-04 bikes being passed on as 2005 plates.

i served my time at a Yamaha dealership and ive got an 05 wr450f on the road, they are very simple to convert, yamaha offer a "road kit" wich is literally a plug in and play sub-harness, for lights ect.
youl obviosly need headlights/tail light/horn and speedo.

give me a pm if you have any questions.

Intend for no lights. Daytime MOT only job... VERY unlikely to take out more than 5 or 6 times a year.

SVA shouldn't be required, its a standard production bike?

If I had to buy the plug in set... how much do you reckon it would come to? Many differences between 2003/4 and the 2005 bike? Few HP and designs do not worry me Smile Heck, I'll probably fix and sell Laughing

Also with the road kit...what do you do after its fitted?!

I thought that if it had a number plate already then you are golden, just fit whatever combination of lights and sound that you need. But if it hasn't had got a plate you need an MSVA certificate before you can be issued with one from the DVLA?

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick? I'll leave it up to more knowledgeable people to point you in the right direction!

MSVA wouldn't be required because it's a dirt bike and there's special exemptions for that.

Not sure if they have type approval etc?
Light kits are needed to compete in some enduros, as well as being useful for use in the dark, of course, regardless of road use.

Because yours is a production bike, it will already have the wiring harness for the kit, you just buy it, and plug it in, it comes with all the nice posh waterproof connectors too!
the wiring harness on its own isnt that costly, as it isnt very big, youl just need the headlight, tail light and horn, wich are readily available from various places.

If your making it daytime use only, you only need a rear light, horn and some sort of speedo.

Im guessing it doesnt have a log book? if not, you can actually get it put through an MOT with the chassis number, send the mot cert off with a form (Registration of vehicle form (V55/4) and they will return a logbook with an age related registration plate.

Try this link to give you a better idea.

This is the bike in question.

Does it look like an 05? Was stolen/recovered still had police ident tag on it so it is legit. Thumbs Up

That twinshock site seems good, finding a dating letter might be quite hard, but the low fees and the fact it shouldn't need a MSVA are quite appealing.

MOT.. I have a happy tester.. if I get insurance on the chassis number, could I legally ride it to the MOT station or would it need to be trailered there?

it looks like an 05, a few things like the routing of the front brake line (was different on earlyer forks) indicate that it seems the right vintage, the plastics arent right, but thats obvious.

Hope you dont mind me asking, but what are you paying for it?

It looks like its been abit of a "docker" Laughing
I wouldnt pay too much for that to be honest.. the engines on these are pretty bomb proof, but do need abit of care and attention (good oil, and good filters are the main thing)

Gearbox issues arent unheard of, but thats usually down to people being too rough, or down to very little maintenence, just something to check before you hand over any money.

In my opinion, these are great bikes, and will go forever if looked after with simple services, if you keep good oil in her, and change/clean filters properly, it will last longer than you will.

my advice (and many others) will probably all be based on the cost of the thing.

Fuck knows, not seen it in person yet.

Attractive price, I don't particularly want to shout about price at the moment.

Doesn't seem to hard at the moment.

Verify the age with a dating letter.
Get insurance on VIN.
MOT it with the VIN.
Send shit to DVLA. Possibly have to take bike to them to get it measured (seat height)
Await documents.

Apparently "enduro" bikes need to have a minimum seat height and minimum ground clearance.

Over 900mm seat height and 300ish mm ground clearance.

Jack up kit Laughing

Went and had a look.

Money will be exchanged tomorrow Very Happy

The frame has been tampered with a grinder etc. But have the recovery documents from 5-0 so can at least feel a little safer owning it.

Will get it home tomorrow and clean it up/strip it down over the weekend. Needs a spoke in the wheels, forks need stripping and rebuilding, needs rewiring as the guy who robbed it before cut the living hell out of it.

So yeah, the majority is there, frame, engine, forks.

Gonna be fun.. might sell half done again but hopefully have a project thread with more content.

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/DSC00453.jpg

To get my WR250 road legal

1.) Bought Number plate £6.00 ebay

2.) Bought Flexible number plate holder £7.00 ebay

3.) Gaffa Tape on headlight and rear light £1.00

4.) Horn powered by 9v fire alarm battery £15.00

5.) MOT £25.00

I did put it through Daylight MOT to save fitting Rear brake light, brake light switches x2, Indicators, number plate light and loads more shit that would have cost a fortune.

ohhh....Your tyres need to be marked MST (Multi Surface Tyre)

I have no logbook.

I have no registration currently, need to get it tested and registered... hopefully the engine numbers are intact, should be able to lock down what year it is, maybe even the matching frame number from Yamaha.
