Anyone recommend any good mobile phone insurance suppliers?

I know most people get it with their banks but my bank are useless bastards (Nationwide) and I'm due an upgrade in a couple weeks and would like Galaxy Note 2, massive screen = breakage I imagine.

The provider is an option but they may not be the best price vs efficiency.

Don't bother, put the money you would spend on insurance in a bank account and use it only if it breaks.

That's one way of doing it.

Cost of Samsung Galaxy Note II is probably, what, £650? Cover is about £6-£8 a month, so £75-£100 for the year. Excess is £50-£100 depending on where you go. You'd potentially have to break more than 1 in a 6 year return period to make the insurance viable financially.

It is, however, peace of mind that you don't have to fork out another £600 if you do happen to lose it in month 3 of a 24 month contract.

When your due your upgrade, go into carphone warehouse and serif they can match the upgrade deal. Take the insurance out with them.

If your going for a two year deal, then insure for the first year at least. Most two year contracts allow you to reduce the package after a year (double check this before signing anything).

A number of phone companies and banks use the same people for insurance, LSG. I think they are owned or part of carphone warehouse. The service you get will be the same so you may as well base it on price.

There's a nice little animated mouse on the telly who will happily relieve you of £15 a month for peace of mind if that's what you want. Mice are tricky little things to track down though, particularly when you need to make a claim.

FWIW to date, the only phone I've had stolen is the one that I had insured. Presence of a safety net makes it far less likely you'll stay on the tightrope, if you see what I mean.

I had cover from LSG via my coop bank account, it was rubbish.

I tried to use it for a W995i that was damaged, they wouldn't look at it though because I'd already sent it back to o2 who said they couldn't/wouldn't fix it.

Not that its important, the phone got water damaged (it was sweat actually from when I gave a fuck about my general health and used a gym.) O2 said nae to a repair and LSG, even although they said they covered this sort of thing also said no.

I argued, they took it, fixed it (sort of.) It lasted about a month then the screen died.

It was just a shit phone.

Mobile phones are like sun glasses, why folk spend hundreds on them is a mystery because you will lose/sit on them/have it stolen at some point.

Snap, I have a Galaxy S2 and I'm always finding amazing things it can do. The problem is that when I try and replicate what it did, I've forgotten how I did it the first time. Laughing

Overall, a bit of a scam IMHO.

We've got 4 smartphones in our house, and I got quoted £80 a month to cover them. Then after looking in the small print, they don't cover you if you lose your phone, unless you have been a victim of crime and can provide a Crime Reference Number!

Just take more care of it!

That's loads of money. Loss isn't covered but breaking it is, dropping it in liquid is, having it nicked off you is etc - as long as you understand what you're insured for then it's a case of weighing up how much the cover is worth to you.

True enough, but as a previous poster said, the fact that we have no phone insurance means that we are more careful looking after our stuff...

I think that the reason the quote was so expensive was that all the phones are current generation - ie Galaxy s3, HTC One x etc.

Phone insurance seems like a rather odd concept.

To me, insurance is protection against catastrophic loss. It's intended for stuff you frankly couldn't pay for yourself.

If losing your mobile phone is catastrophic to your personal finances, I have to wonder how you justified buying it in the first place.

It's never going to be revenue positive on average. Unless you think the insurance companies have a failed business model. In which case, they might not be around to honour your policy when you come to claim.

It isn't about being revenue positive - it's a smoothing of financial burden. Agree with you on the cost vs financial position thing but most of these phones are available on contract at ~£40 a month which isn't massive money and, again, because it's over months it's far less intrusive to someone's means. A lot of people wouldn't be able to lay out £600+ for a new phone if the worst happened but can happily find £40 a month including insurance to have one.

Sounds to me like the decision to spend 40 quid a month was catastrophic, then.

You're just letting the financial industry save your money for you, making 20-30% in the process.

If underwriters didn't make a profit, they would go bust.

So they can't, for the most part*, be paying out more than is coming in from premiums. If you're a careful type of person, you're often better looking after the money yourself.

I still don't understand why anyone who isn't pretty loaded thinks £40 a month is a reasonable figure to pay for an overpriced toy calculator though.

* I've heard things about motors underwriters paying out more than is coming in from premiums alone, but i figure they make profits regardless through various financial tricks.
