Not sure whether I should post this here or in the New Bikers thread, this one seems more appropriate.

I'm not sure whether this is a fault caused by myself (poor riding technique perhaps) or a problem with the bike.

I bought a Honda CBF125 brand new last week. Been riding it to work this week (as well as going on test rides to improve my ability/confidence) and so far I've done 180 miles. I noticed yesterday that I had difficulty getting from 2nd to 1st. It kept going to neutral and then the lights would go green and I'm stuck there for a while trying to engage 1st! It must have happened at least three or four times.

Rode the bike this morning, all seemed fine until it happened again (this time not getting from 3rd to 2nd!). Had the problem from 1st to 2nd once more as well.

One thing I noticed, was that on both trips, it only started happening after doing a period in a 40mph zone. I was told to run the engine in, not to exceed 6000 revs which I have been sticking to. In the first few days I did go over the 6000 revs when starting off a couple of times but I haven't done it for a prolonged period.

Does anybody have any advice?

I've seen this older topic which gives a few tips at things to check so I will do, mainly the chain tension and oil level.

Make sure that you are not resting your foot on top of, or underneath the gear lever and that the lever is actually returning to the central position after each gear change.
If the problem persists then return the bike to the dealer, you say the bike's brand new so it's a warranty issue. It may be something as simple as clutch adjustment.

Hmmm, I think I am resting my foot on the gear lever (lightly). Will this have had a knock on affect going forward? Will simply not doing it from now on fix the issue?

Most likely needs clutch or cable adjustment,
or drive chain. Keep your eye on the oil level too.
Over/under filling can cause gear change issues.

Will this be because I have messed it up or do brand new bikes tend to need adjusting so soon?

With a brand new bike everything's bedding in
not just the engine. Cables, springs, chains can stretch,
initial wear of moving parts etc. Can be like buying
a new pair of shoes and ya have to keep adjusting
your laces as the shoes stretch.

Why not pop in to your dealer just for peace of mind.

Yes, it'll likely just be 30 seconds of clutch cable and/or chain adjustment needed. These are pushbike levels of maintenance.

But you've paid Japanese prices for a bike made by and for the Indian domestic market. It costs a bowl of rice and a couple of chapatis over there.

Get your money's worth out of the dealer. Don't be fobbed off with "leave it and see if it gets better". Anything that might get better by itself can and should be made better immediately with the aforementioned tweaking.
