I've done plenty of internet trawling looking at bikes and found quite a few 125's at a grand or under. I'd just now like some advice on what models to look and know some real world prices. I'm fairly tall aswell at 6ft. I also weigh187lbs.

I have two pieces of advice for you.

The first is that the new bikers forum is here:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewforum.php?f=32

The second is that the search facility is at the top left of this page just below the BCF logo.

By searching for "tall 125" I found the following page:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=557570

I'm 6ft and 16st, the usual 125 suspects (CG's, YBR's, Varadero's etc) are all fine.

Just pick one you like, go sit on one and buy it.

You could probably pick up a CBR125 for under £1k, I got my 2008 one (7k miles) for 1.2k. I'm 6ft2 and find the CBR125 a tad cramped but it's tolerable for the amount of time I'm riding it.

I find the CBR125 great up until around 50mph, then thereafter it starts to struggle. Also manage to get around 100mpg with it, nothing like pulling up to the petrol pump, 'trying' to fill it up then realising you don't have enough room for the "minimum 5 litres delivery", and then realising you've just rode about 100miles on 5 litres.

My suggestion for a big for a 125, (at least sportsbike wise) is a Gilera GFR. I'm not that sure of how easily you would find a mint example of one for a Grand, but I can guess! Laughing

It will be the best thing this side of an RC30 if you do get one tho! Thumbs Up

Cheers guys. I've done some searches on this site and came accross the honda varadero. Now that is a bike I can see owning! I'd deffo put an extra £500 in for one.

I am in two minds about trail bikes though, but being able to go on and off road should be pretty sweet.

Looking seriously into the Varadero now. Could be my first step towards the Dakar! Very Happy

Ideally I just want a bike that's a jack of all trades. Good at everything, but excellent at nothing. Commuting during the summer is why I need a bike (I prefer them to cars), and something to also have plenty of fun. I look to biking to become a hobby and not just a means of transport.

The Varadero is a solid looking bike, it was my first choice but I couldn't find any locally for a decent price which is what forced my hand to purchase the CBR. I'd rode the CBR during one of my lessons and I loved the responsiveness of the throttle and how much better the rear brake was compared to the YBR, I think it's because the CBR rear brake is a disc brake whereas the YBR's is a drum?

Yeah they seem quite pricey. What would be a good price for a Varadero that's not too beat up and won't have too many problems? I found one for a grand, but 62k on the clock!! The CBR might be too small for me.

Varadero 125, VanVan, XR 125. These are the best do-it-all 125cc bikes.

VanVan is the probably the most popular 125cc manual bike owned by people with full licence.

62k isn't too much, if it's been well serviced.

As previously mentioned, ##Paddy## has one and it's got over 70k on it; it runs like a Swiss watch and his aim is to get it up to 100k in the next few months, which it sounds like it will do easily, if he keeps changing the oil.

Your extra 500 quid will come in handy, but you should be able to get a pretty decent Varadero for under £1500.
