Suzuki GZ125 Marauder - engine upgrade??? ideas???

Hi folks,

A friend of mine is selling a 125 marauder as she's moving up to a bigger bike.

She's done a lot of customizing to the bike which can only be described as mint.

I've admired it for a while but as a 125 it's useless to me.

I know a GZ250 IL twin has the same frame and everything etc... so...

I got wondering - that frame looks like it will take a small v twin or mabe a small 400 IL4.

50-60 horsepower would be loads for a little bike like this, with brake upgrades and maybe suspension upgardes it would make a funky little bike.....no?

I was thinking of a early 90's GSX400R engine or maybe a 500 twin.

What are your thoughts? anybody done this to a 125 / 250 marauder?

Hah, I've seen this bike for sale on facebook for £1400. Looks good as a custom 125.

You might struggle to get a big single in there - they tend to be quite tall engines.

Anything bigger than around 350cc and you might start overwhelming the chassis.

GPz 305 motor?

aye, when I opened the image and made it bigger there actually aint a lot of room, it would take a lot of modifying the frame I reckon.

about a 350 would be max yeah. a 350 2T would be mental in it.

I'm going to go ahead and quote Marjay here, "Bikes are not like lego".

Fitting another engine to a bike takes a LOT of work. You have to find and engine that will fit in the frame, you then have to fabricate and weld on mounts for the engine ensuring that things like the sprockets are in line and the carbs fit properly. Then you have to ensure the air box fits and if it doesn't you have to fit open filters and remap the engine/rejet the carbs. Then you have to replace the wiring loom with one that suits the engine. Then you have to make an exhaust system.

After all this you have to inform your insurance company that its a modified bike and watch your insurance premiums double (or more).

This are just the basics, on a 125 you should upgrade other things too. You should be looking at upgrading the brakes and possibly upgrading the suspension.

After you've done all this you end up with a bike thats most likely worth less then it was in the first place, is most likely dreadful to ride and is probably very expensive to insure. IMO it's a much better idea to just buy a bigger bike unless you have an exact idea of what you want, have the skills to build it and know that at the end it will be worth a lot less then it is now.

It looks like a nice tidy 125, leave it as a nice tidy 125.
Why spoil what looks like a good bike?

Why not get a 125 "shitter" and mutilate that instead?
