Another Christmas legacy.

Given rucksack, now in bin. Binbag is stronger.

Can anyone suggest a rucksack which can hold a fair bit if necessary, and be of sufficient quality to last longer than 2 days? Rolling Eyes

Army issue bergen or day sack. You can pick them up in army surplus stores and the prices are normally quite reasonable. They're made of win.

Depends on what you need it for?

I have a FOX one given to me by the girl friends mother, and its perfect for me, got a space in it for the laptop and more than enough room for all the supplies I need for classes.

I could if I wasn't being put off by Tom Hanks having a wank...

Seriously I have a no brand Millets 35l rucksack that has been going for 18 (fuck that's a long time) years. All weathers and conditions on a bike, festivals, kipping over at a mates, and still going strong..

Wink

I think the army surplus idea's a goodun, their stuff isn't shite.

Also I'll try Millets although anything can happen in 18 years - at least I'll be able to inspect the stitching to avoid being stitched myself!

my money is always on cactus or macpac

the cactus gear is all canvas and stitched by hand with care, but you pay for the privilege of owning bombproof gear though,
ive owned one of there day packs for 15 years and its still as good as the day i bought it, same goes for there trousers, 2 years to wear a set in, tough manly stuff,

all my tents, sleeping bags and larger packs are macpac/fairydown and they have travelled around the world with me numerous times,
mountaineering, hiking, etc and have never had an issue with any of it. but they are now getting the clothing range made in china, packs etc are still nz made

unfashionable things tend to be stronger.
I had a millets one that is tough.

I bought a prettier rucksack from decathlon and the bottom ripped out after packing in heavy stuff. Its true that it suffered a heavy load being forced into it, but the millets one would havetaken that abuse.

I have had one for years now that I had from Blacks, the outdoor type store.

It was designed for MTB's and so has no side pockets sticking out, and is comfortable against your back, cos its lifted off by a sprung mesh thing.
Opens up quite big, has chest and waist straps and best of all....

...a clip for your keys at the top of the bag....

I have had it for in excess of 10 years now, and while its faded and doesnt look as pretty as it used to, it has done the job day in day out for years

Thumbs Up

I picked up a weekend stay-over rucksack from costco a couple of months back. Seems pretty heavy duty.

I had a Berghaus one but it only lasted a few years, I'm not sure if it's a new thing but it had a 'made in China' tag inside which isn't usually a sign of quality. The stiching was ok but all three zips broke over time.
The 'Nike' backpack I had before actually lasted longer but to be fair it did cost a similar amount as the Berghaus bag. I think my next rucksack will be one without zips and have a draw cord instead as the zips seem to be a weak point on most bags.

They are seriously good value for money, they come in different colours and sizes. Really well made and a fraction of the cost of the bigger brands.

This is the rucksack I use, Its very well made and you'd be surprised how much stuff you can pack into it!

I've had it up to a good 50kg stuffed brimming.

The zips where under ALOT of stress and have been perfectly fine.

I'd be quite happy putting a small child in there and going for a ride.

Of course I wouldnt, I just mean I'd be trusting enough of the rucksack that much.

https://rockmerchuniverse.com/images/linkinparkmeteorabackpack.jpg

They're not to expensive given the quality of the build on them either.

That is nearly 8 stone, I'm not sure if many small rucksacks are designed to carry 8 stone about Laughing

I'm glad to hear that - I just got back from there. I was looking for a Millets in North St Brighton (according to their site) and didn't see one - I checked what Black's was doing.

Got one of their 65+5 Alpines on sale for £35, seems OK (seams OK Wink )

So ta folks, I might have what I need- fingers crossed!

I'm a serial traveller so have a lot of experience in this... they're all arse.

Let me explain. Whenever I change country, I get 20-30kg to bring EVERYTHING I own on the plane... so naturally, I fill the shit out of my carryon rucksack.

Since getting the kindle, life has been kinder. But it seems they are basically designed to carry; air, styrofoam, kittens and more air. If you put heavy shit in them, they will all explode.

I did find reinforcing all the stitching around the straps with elastic worked damn well on previous abused bags. But yeh, buy cheap and buy often. A well used expensive bag dies in roughly the same time as a well used cheap one... IME anyway.

I swear by Osprey and Dakine. At the moment i'm using one of these.

https://www.ospreypacks.com/en/product/vertical_endeavors__snowplay/kode_30

Very well made and the different length backs mean it fits me better than anything i've owned previously.

British army issue PLCE bergen with side pouches and yoke.

Made of win.

Holds 120 litres with the side pouches attached. The side pouches detach, zip together and attach to a yoke to make a 20l daysack.

You get long and short back ones.

Mine was second hand 20 years ago and still going strong.

One like this. They also did them in green. This one doesn't come with the yoke to take the side pouches.

Have used Vaude and now have an Osprey. Both are pretty expensive but good.

If you have a fair bit of money Then consider getting Ortleib. Very rarely if ever go wrong and the back up service is ridiculously good (used by round the world/touring cyclists for decades!).

Not sure how available they are any more. I bought one of these:

https://www.voyagermotorcycles.co.uk/templates/voyager/images/store_images/ripper_backpack.jpg

In America, back in 2003. I still have it. It's been used through my college days, and then on my back, on the back of all my bikes. Been crammed with as much as I can possibly get in it.

Wicked bag. Zippers are all still working fine.

Only downside, is it's not that big. But it's bloody strong!

I am still using a very cheap nike bag I got 10+ years ago. I think it cost £5. One of the zips is gone, but its still waterproof at 100mph Laughing Its just a bit small.

Thinking of getting a 60 liter roll top bag to replace my broken top box... hmmm

Oooo bags, now you're talking. Me being a lady that's my kinda subject Razz Haha no seriously, I've always bought my rucksacks from camping shops and all of them (Dakine, Gelert, Osprey, etc.) have been brilliant - I've put all of them through their paces and I've never had one fail on me. The only reason I bought my last new one is cos I lost the one before somehow in a house move. Before that I changed because I wanted something a little smaller, before that I was just after something in a different colour. I've still got them all (well, apart from the lost one obviously!)

I shop around for a bargain and I'm not bothered about having 'this years model' or anything, the most I'll pay will be like £20/£30, but this seems to see me right.

I've heard good things about these army surplus ones though, and at £12.99, surely it's worth a punt:
