Biker dies in early morning crash
A motorcyclist was killed in North Yorkshire after he collided with a car and a tractor towing a trailer.

The accident happened at 6.47am on Monday on a minor road at Hensall near Selby.

Police say the rider, who has not been named but is said to be from outside North Yorkshire, was found to be dead at the scene.

The road had to be closed while emergency crews cleared the wreckage of his BMW bike.

I feel I should break with tradition here and say: "Who cares?".

I didn't know him, you didn't know him, thousands of people die a day, lots on Britains roads, if we had a thread about each person dieing the forum would be massively clogged up - why does one person (who might be a mass murderer or something) deserve a "RIP" thread when maybe someone else doesn't.

Fair enough, respect to family and all that, but I think it's a bit weird to start up threads about people dieing who you don't know and had no contact with.

I am not speaking for anyone here but say it is a biker I saw every day, a nod now and then, courteous riding around each other, small things like that, although you don't actually know them you have a connection and if that person were to die, maybe it would shake me up a bit and maybe I would post about it, just my thoughts I guess.

Like I said above, I sometimes see a BMW rider and wondered if it was him who was killed. Oh, and the feeling that "there but for...etc".
As an update I've found he was Malcolm Clifford Barber, 46, of Thorne, near Doncaster.

Carvell, I'm sure you'll find comfort in the fact that should you die in a nasty motorcycle accident there are some people who would not give a toss.

I'm sure Carvell would have a good response to that, i.e. we know and love Carvell, whereas we didn't know this dude that died, but irrespective, Map, that is funny as hell. Cool

I'm sure the majority of the population would not give a toss. Which is his point - someone that we don't know dies in a crash. Do we actually care? Are we meant to care just cos he rode a bike? So I have to care each time a car driver dies?

If it was 'the guy I nod to every day has died in a crash' then fair enough, but nobody's even sure if that's the case.

Would you feel saddend if the biker had been killed in a deliberate act?

If so, I don't see the difference between the two.

I heard some biker had been killed by someone throwing a brick at them, the biker swerved to avoid it and collided head on with a car. I believe he was a traffic cop or something similar.

Feel sympathetic to that situation?

If not, you're a feckin robot....

I feel sympathetic to anyone being killed / dying.

But do I think about it 30 seconds later when I'm onto the next thread, the news bulletin moves on to the next topic or I'm a couple of miles further up the road... in all honesty, generally no.

Certain stories / scenarios / sights will stay longer, especially if they have some relevance to you (eg. that could be the guy I nod to or the biker who crashed and died just up behind my house) but in general you just move on and probably don't give it another thought.

Do you also care about every single person around the world that gets killed every second of the day?

Thought not...

Can I just get my tuppence-worth in here - I think the fact that people are bickering over something like this is ridiculous!

Fair enough Map, wanted to comment on, but honestly Carvell, if you didn't care, then why post??? Confused

To express my opinion on the matter.

I could have started a new thread about it if you wanted, but then what's the point if there is one here I can add my contribution to.

If the same were to happen to me I wouldn't expect random people to start expressing the fact that they are sorry or whatever, I'd hate that, because they don't know me, never met me, never spoken to me, why should they care, how am I different from the thousands of others that die a day.

I don't think anyone's bickering, I think it's a valid debate on an interesting subject.

Of course not, but its someone who gets the same kick out of life as I do. I'm not saying everyone should feel sympathetic, but only understand that some otehrs could do...

I was going to post the exact same thing that Carvell did but decided not to, mainly because I'm lazy. I read in my local paper over summer about a lot of bikers dying on roads that I have reguarly used, I didn't post about them on here because nobody will care.

Should I start posting about every random biker I hear of thats died, I mean I may have passed them on the road once and nodded, maybe even had a small chat with them at a bike meet or traffic lights once. The point still stands that he never knew the guy and neither did any of us, if you really want to post about every death lets turn the board into the local paper and have a births and deaths section, shall have to post about every birth we hear about though, they might grow up to be bikers.
