just updated my insurance, didn't mention pillion cover (is it a LEGAL requirement?) but updating to a full license was bugger all, an email and phone call later, they're sending out a prepaid envelope to shove a photocopy of photocard/counterpart to them for their records. no cost.

I don't believe so, the general consensus seems to be that in an accident your pillion could claim as a third party.

IIRC Rogerborg mentioned something about it being untrue that the pillion wouldn't be covered - some stuff about liability and stuff.. I wasn't paying too much attention at the time...

I'll try and find it..

FWIW when I took out my policy with H&R it didn't cost any more to not having a 'pillion exclusion' so I took it anyway. If they had wanted more I'd have left it and taken pillions anyway.

I can see no requirement in the road traffic act requiring seperate pillion cover.

The fact is, if a valid certificate of insurance is in force covering the vehicle and driver in question, the police are not interested.

Any other niceties are a matter of contract between you and your insurer, they can argue the toss about who is liable for what.

i believe that is true, HOWEVER

the insurance company will only pay third party even if fully comp as per the statement of fact (which 98% will say pillion yes/no)

Hey Lofimaster.

Out of interest, what are you insuring?

If it isn't anything overly-sporty and you don't live in a terrible area (in terms of statistics), try a company called "Ramasis Insurance". If you Google that and get a Motorcycle quote then you could well do better.

In my experience they tend to be much cheaper than anyone else and much nicer than anyone else, plus they really know what they are doing and even spent a fair while with me to help REDUCE my premium whilst getting MORE cover! They're a bang up insurance company.

See what you can do with them, better than being robbed blind by Scumbag Swinton.

Cheers!

I thought this until they wanted to charge me £45 for changing my address (see thread)! Until that point I've always thought very highly of Ramasis and yes they have been very competitive...

It's my good old cbf125!
I was only updating my details as I passed my das today!
I live in hackney and they say its a dodgy area..
Anyway I'm planing to upgrade my bike soon so I won't bother insuring or carrying pillion with my 125.
I'll have a look on the company you just mentioned! Thanks mate

Hey Cheesey.

I'm quite surprised at that, although I think they may waive that fee in certain cases. Like if you change address when renewing your policy they may well waive the cost.

Although, even if I was requested £45 for the change I'd still stick with them as they are so cheap in comparison with so many other features plus they are golden with customer service.

The thing that struck me the most was when the Ramasis Insurance person I was talking to on the phone spent a good while looking at my policy going:

"Why do you have a £1000 voluntary excess? If I put that down to £200 your policy only goes up by £2, want me to do that? Okay, great sir. Oh, also, do you want me to remove the legal cover added to your policy? I am not sure why that is on there because your policy includes legal cover already on it's own and taking that off takes around £55 off your policy, want me to take it off? Okay, great sir".

In the end I ended up with a renewal less than half the price of the cheapest quote elsewhere which was reduced even further by Ramasis Insurance with my cover exactly the same and better for me in the result of a theft/fire/incident of any kind.

The only insurance company I can honestly give a 10/10. Thumbs Up.

Lofimaster, I am sure you'll have no problem insuring that with them although if it does say "Cannot quote online" don't be disheartened, just give them a call and they'll most likely sort you out. I hope the company are good for you, please do let us know how it goes.

Cheers! Thumbs Up!

same story for me really.
Called up to let them know I had passed and would be riding my SV.
Wanted £££ extra to upgrade + admin fee & because I had been in the policy for over 3-4 months, I could not be refunded and change company Evil or Very Mad

Just took the hit and got on the SV, one of those things I guess Sad
