I'm just guessing, but it appears that you're some sort of paedophile. Thinking

Make sure you get your data off the drive before doing that!

The worst thing you can do with a drive that may be failing is to start running tests on it - that will just cause it to fail.

If it has made a screeching noise then I would get my data off it as quick as I can, then start playing with hard disk tools.

Smart readings are mildly useless imo, all the major vendors have their own take on the 'standard' and hence will give wildly varying values between drives. I've seen plenty of smart verified drives that were utterly unusable Neutral

A few things I will note though, 42c is a bit on the warm side if not excessive, that coupled with the age and run time as well as that screech would have me concerned too. Unless it failing isn't of any real consequence or hassle I'd be considering retiring that drive sooner rather than later even if it does pass those tests.

I got brain cancer from reading the Daily Mail.

OK, the secret is that if S.M.A.R.T. tells you that a drive is about to fail then it probably is. But if S.M.A.R.T. doesn't tell you that a drive is about to fail, then it possibly is. All drives fail eventually, it's just a question of when.

Trust your ears, get that sucker backed up.
