------------
| |+->to positive source (straight to battery or ignition/light)
| |
| |_->to ground (battery or frame)
------------

can throw a fuse in if you want, and if you'll be pulling a lot of current through it then maybe don't take it off the ignition live

also best not to wire it with red on negative and black on positive like i did for mine...

if you just buy a lighter socket then strip the plug off the end so you have a red and black wire then just put some crimp fittings on and simply attach to your battery shouldn't need a fuse but you can always get one to be safe and the find a suitble spot to cut into plastics or werever to attach it should work fine
good luck pal

Not how I would do it.

You're either going to be running more through the wiring loom than it was designed for or risk draining the battery whilst the bike is off (if you leave something plugged in by accident).

If I was touring I'd want to run my cigarette lighter socket through a relay just to ensure I didn't get a flat battery by accident. Up to you though.

Stinkwheel has a good post on here of how to wire one in.

Definitely go for a fuse and close to the battery.

If you get a chaffed wire you have a potential fire on your hands.

Lot of baffling info here for a n00b.

Halfords sell a lighter socket extension (They come in 2/3/4 banks), with a length of wire coming from it, into a male plug, so you can plug it into your car, and it gives you more sockets.

I bought one of these for my van as the socket in the ashtray was busted. I did away with it all together, and just started from scratch with the one I'd bought.

I think all in, it cost me about a tenner, with an inline fuse holder.

Take the new socket extension, and chop off plug.
Strip back both wires, throw an inline fuse, and inline switch into the +ive wire, and then link it straight onto the battery.

Then ground the other wire.

This way, you don't run the risk of overloading any wiring on the bike, and the wiring provided with the new sockets is pretty chunky stuff. I run 2 phone chargers, a laptop charger, and a satnav charger out of mine all at the same time with no issues.

the porblem with this is, you can drain the battery if you forget to unplug your device. you should take a feed from ignition live - sometimes called switched live- (+ve feed to the rear brake switch will be fine) through the coil of a relay, this means the relay will switch off the plug when the ignition is off. you take a feed from the battery through a fuse to the switched side of the relay to the plug (centre is +ve). the other wire from the plug goes strait back to the earth side of the battery.

its realy quite simple and works on some basic electrics nad avoiding the battery going flat.

i hope you going to carry some jump lead on your trip.

I know exactly how a relay works, and I do agree, that is a more professional way of wiring it.
But as he is going to be using it for his sat nav, why will the socket be in use when he is not riding anywhere? Wink

thats the problem with plugs, you can plug other things into it, like phone chargers
