In the past whenever i have bought helmets from shops, the boxes have always had some polystyrene or similar in to stop the lid from moving about during transit.
I have just received a lid i bought online from a very reputable seller, and it has arrived simply inside a helmet bag, inside a cardboard box. No effort to protect the lid in transit whatsoever, and you can actually see inside the box where the peak has deformed the cardboard, so it has been chucked about a bit.

Given the whole " replace a lid if its been dropped from over 1.5m" thing, should i be concerned? I mean it looks fine, but if it has been chucked about in transit then in theory it could well not be right?

Do some helmets come from the manufacturer WITHOUT any packing in the box?

Thought is ask here before i go back to the seller...

Cheers in advance

I have purchased 4 brand new helmets online from reputable dealers and NONE of them had any foam/polystyrene/bubble protection inside the box. Just the helmet in a bag with a box as protection.

My helmets were LS2...Spada and 2 HJC ones..ordered from Ghost bikes and Lids direct...so id imagine thats the standard boxing.

Had 2 helmets from M&P I believe. Both came with just a bag in a box, but the helmet box was packed into a further box with plenty of padding around it.

Ok thats cool. Just being paranoid eh!

Still, it begs the question - if companies are happy to send lids like that, surely we should be happy to wear lids that have been dropped from waist height eh!

I'm happy to wear my helmet still if it has been dropped from not too high of a distance, I have an agv k4 that i have dropped several times, but I wouldn't pay for a new one after only having it for about 6 months Evil or Very Mad

Although I am considering a caberg v2x carbon soon Smile

I worked at the Royal Fail warehouse once (bad memories) and the care taken with the parcels leave a lot to be desired.

Both of my helmets have been bought at bike shows.

My MX lid came in its original box with helmet bag and in foam and what not. My other helmet only came in a helmet bag but then it was only £50, was last seasons design so saved nearly £80.

I dont know if i'd be too happy about that though.

I've also heard that if you drop your helmet, unless you crack it, because there is nothing inside (like your head) to deform the polystyrene then it's perfectly fine.

Pays your money and takes your choice.

I change helmets cause I want a new one, not cause it fell off the sofa Embarassed .

Helmets are designed to withstand impacts at high speeds when a heavy head and body are attached. I do not believe that the comparatively low forces involved by being dropped with its low weight, is going to be enough to do any damage.

If they decided to transport a bowling ball inside to wreck the polystyrene inside the helmet, maybe you should be worried.

Otherwise you have nothing to worry about.

And this is why I don't buy into the "drop and replace" idea. Because these lids get battered in transit and they're always fine.

The inside can only compress if something on the inside (usually your head) compresses it outwards.

Chill out. Ride.

My order from Lidsdirect, about 3 years ago was the helmet box, inside another box packed with bubble wrap.

I'd be slightly unimpressed to receive it in just one battered box.

Surely you mean a Crown Bowls Bowling ball and not a Ten Pin Bowling ball... Smile

My booklet that came with my current HJC specifically states that the helmet does not need to be replaced unless dropped from a height for more than 4 feet.

If your helmet is going to protect you at 100mph odd smashing against the floor, I'm sure, inside a cardboard box, being carted in a van, it will survive.

The point is that they're only designed to survive one impact

Im not sure I really buy into that theory. When I was younger I used to play American Football...the helmets were made of similar construction to motorcycle helmets and the amount of hits taken on them was amazing.yet they rarely used to crack. In fact I only ever saw one break...and that was when one of the lads decided to repeatedly head butt a brick wall to see at what point it would break.

I know motorcycle helmets have to withstand higher speed and bigger impacts, but I wouldn't think a drop from 4 foot would write it off.
