Hi

I have decided to start a new project for 2013.
I have a 99 RS 125 and I intend to install a larger single cylinder engine.

This build is for fun but I would like to put it on a day M.O.T.

Will this bike have to go on a Q plate or can I just M.O.T it and insure it has a modified motorcycle.

Anyone done a similar build?

Thanks

Hi

Shouldn't get Q plated (assuming it is already registered and you have all the docs - if you are trying to register it freshly then all bets are off).

What engine are you thinking of using? Rotax 257 goes into the RS125 frame easily (very easily on the early 123 engined bikes, bit more difficult on the 122 engined bikes). Difficult bit is finding a 257 engine.

All the best

Keith

Thanks Keith

I did think the Rotax 257 engine, I agree finding one is difficult; I did see one go with a kart for £700 on ebay a few months ago.

I'm looking at KTM engines as a lot seem to have the left hand kick start.

I wan't to retain some of the RS 125 features but not sure if to go 4t or 2t.

Hi

There is / was an engine on Ebay claiming to be one in the last few days. Although not 100% sure (it was from a French trials bike and had different engine covers on). Could be worth speaking to Peter Knight and see if he knows of any 257 engines available.

Large single might be a fun, but suspect you would need to resite the battery, etc. Would make it a pretty major job.

Not sure if you have seen this thread:-

Might be worth asking him if there has been any progress.

All the best

Keith

Thanks
Will check it out, I did see RS500 thread which gave me a few ideas.

I have a rough idea of the finished RS, I intend to complete within 3 to 4 months.

I will start a thread in the projects section when I get started.

The biggest pita with them is being right hand drive as opposed to left, and not many bikes used that.

Fairly common thing to do. There is a racing series for single cylinder bikes called supermono. So sticking something like a tuned KTM engine in an RS125 frame is a good place to start.

Hi
When I inform my insurers of the changes made, will they question the engine swap?; would this pass the M.O.T with the new engine installed?

BMW f650 lumps have been grafted into RS125's before.
I've seen a few unfinished projects pop up on ebay now and again.

Most run of the mill insurance companys wont touch a bike with an engine change, I tried several with my mito 350 without luck, there are a few that will though, luckily.footman james are very good and widley used by the modded rd clan,as long as the bike passes an mot....its fine, dvlc may request a tougher vosa check when you change the cc in the logbook though.....

Thanks dougon2wheels
So when I complete the project with the engine change, I M.O.T it insure it, when do I inform dvla? and the veichle tax must increase I guess.

Lets say I'm out riding and I'm insured, the bike has M.O.T and is taxed on the 125cc rate?

The fuzz pull me over, and they check the motorcycle, will I get owned?

Hi

Really wouldn't like to say what they would do. Might laugh it off thinking you are an eccentric nutter, but decide to get that months nickings in one go.

Could tell the DVLA in advance.

Another place to try for insurance is HR Insurance.

All the best

Best bet is inform dvlc first, they may demand a vosa test, if it passes, that will give you the mot, then insure, tax and your away....
