What're some strange junctions you know? I nominate the series of random roundabouts, bonsai intersections and abstract lane changes that make up Smallthorne roundabout between Hanley and Burslem in Stoke. Essentially it's three roundabouts a few yards apart, but has myriad other ins and outs thrown in for bad measure. Smiler will know it, I reckon. The funny thing is despite the anarchy of it, it kind of works (probably cos locals know what to expect):

Been round it once in a car and oddly enough its piss easy. You just have to remember the middle roundabout goes the wrong way. Everything else is just normal roundabouts. It just looks scary.

I vote any junction in Portsmouth on a weekend at around midnight when Aquacabs are out in numbers taking chavs to and from the nightclubs. Its dicing with death at every turn and even some straight roads are death traps.

This is probably the strangest one near me, its on a roundabout.

Confuses the shit out of non-londoners and foreigners.

Caused a lot of accidents.

Know which one is the right one to follow?............ none, its a sculpture lol

Apparently it used to be a massive roundabout with traffic lights and was a complete nightmare. Don't know if that's true or not, but it works pretty well now most of the time.

It is a bit daunting at first though Smile

Sometimes road planners go for the most complicated answer. Many a time just getting the light phase right by a second or so will cure a lot of issues, or getting rid of so many white lines on the road. Keep things simple and it will work.

When I saw the title I automatically thought of the Smallthorne islands. It looks a lot neater on that aerial view than it actually is and typical of a council the last alterations have made it worse than it was originally. Locals only survive because they know to pick a lane then just go for it Mr. Green

Hemel Hempsted and High Wycombe both have a magic roundabout too. I went over the High Wycombe one on my CBT.

Just buying a flat in Colchester so I'm sure I'll experience it sometime soon!

Not so - this layout allows you to nip from one junction to the next without needing to go the whole way around.

Basically a smaller version of this:

(Which has now been redeveloped with flyovers)

Sadlers Farm is so much easier now with the new flyovers, some of the light patterns coming from Basildon end need to be changed though, dont stay green long enough, and even when they do turn green, you are stopped because the ones ahead are red.

For me it's brilliant, these days I go along the A130, underneath the A127 and out towards London, so now I don't need to touch Sadlers at all.
But the old 'multi-roundabout' layout used to work way better than the old single big roundabout.

It's not been on that roundabout for quite a while now, in fact the roundabout has gone.

The traffic light tree is currently in bits, stored in a warehouse. It's going back up soon, most likely outside Billingsgate fish market, depending on the results of our trial holes.

the A130 haha, always full of traffic cops trying to catch speeding bikes especially on a Sunday, they always sit in one of the many laybys on the road.

Where abouts are you from? Smile

I'll never forget rolling into Hemel about a week after passing my driving test, I'd checked the A-Z Road Atlas carefully so I knew exactly where to go Cool , and then I see this sign! Shocked WTF that AIN'T in the highway code. Then I find I'm in a sea of roundabouts with cars going round in both directions. Shocked Shocked

the only one near me is Chester's "hamburger roundabout" its not on areal view but from this link you can see what its like I've seen cars do all sorts and lorries having to do 90 degree turns to get round.
