Oil gallery plug. The casting is drilled through and that plug is just a stopper to keep the oil in.

Hi

How far does that (apparent) crack go? One to the left of the plug.

All the best

If you don't know what it is, why the hell would you want to remove it?

I'm no mechanic so dont take my word for it but it looks like the bottm end big plug retainer screw. Unscrew that if you wish but beware. Your bottom end would fall off and your retainer would be screwed.

I think

This.

I CAD modelled an engine block from a 1.7 Puma.
It had an oil gallery that ran the length of the block and it had an allen head plug just like OP's.

It's a manufacturing thing, cause it wouldn't have been able to have been cast without at least one end of the channel at the surface, and it cant be drilled from the inside. So it's just drilled straight through the side to make the gallery and then plugged.
